I'm wondering if anyone else notices their bike running worse when the fuel tank starts getting low.

Mine does with about 20-25 miles left in the tank.

My bike is an 04 xb12s. I'm wondering if the newer models (06+) with revised fuel pumps have fixed this? Or maybe it's just an isolated case with my bike?

I'm trying to narrow in on the fix. If I can fix this and the crappy shift from 1st to 2nd I'd love this bike.

Seems easy enough, but 300 bux for a fuel pump isn't something I want to do unless I'm certian it will work.

Usually with the Harleys that kind of symptom is a hole or crack in the fuel pump hose.
I have an 05 and it runs the same with or without a full tank. Ran it dry once and still ran the same except for the last hundred yards .

Seems to run a lower pressure when fuel level is low due to the low level pressure sensor in the pump diagram.

Would make sense to reduce flow/pressure as the return would tend to cause aeration near the pickup.

Perhaps a length of tubing from the return hole in the regulator running up the frame/tank a little way to ensure all aeration has resolved by the time it flows to the pickup filter.

I ran mine out of gas just today. All I needed was another half mile . It was running great until then. I managed to shake and swerve an extra mile out of it before it gave up.

I have an 04, and I can say my bike deffinately runs worse on an empty tank vs a full tank. On a full tank, there is very little surging, and great throttle response. after about 80-100 miles though, its starts to surge more, and throttle response goes to poo. As soon as I fill up, all is well again. I would try and check out the lines inside of the tank for any cracking or splitting, but to remove the fuel pump requires removal of the rear swingarm. F that!

On an empty tank, my engine doesn't run at all. It's funny that way. Glad yours runs worse, at least it's running.

Sorry.

I have a 03 and mine runs much worse on a near empty tank as well. You are not alone in this. Surges and stumbles when tank is low!
Fill tank and runs great again.
