Thanks Bart! Foy and Doc - the 2005 and older XBikes have a different swing arm requiring the dipstick to be flexible. I'm in the same boat as you. I have a 2003 XB9S and want one too! Keith | ||

Goodness, can't be too hard to make one flexible. . . I'm guessing the actual meter is in the cap, it would just be a matter of attaching something that conducts heat that was the right length with the right markings, right? Do you think it'd be possible for me to buy one of these and do it myself without breaking it (erm, permanently)? | ||

According to the manufacturer of our thermometers, it is not possible to make the mechanical type flexible. However, an electronic one with a thermocouple on some sort of flexible rod might work. If any of you have any ideas, I'm open to suggestions! Thanks, Keith | ||

I have been thinking about a direct reading mechanical thermometer to keep track of my oil temperature. Had something similar on my old Sportster but it was "electronic" and would occasionally stop working when it got warm. I think this will be much better. I already have their sliders, - they are top notch, - based on that, guess I will be adding this soon. | ||

Hi Angelo, I would love to be able to offer multiple colors. However, most anodizers charge a flat rate whether there is one part or 40 making small runs of parts very expensive. Keith | ||

...would it be possible to seal the thermometer stick and readout and still rotate independent of the screw-in portion of the dipstick? What kind of pressure does the interior of the swingarm see? | ||

Hey Bryan - I'm not sure I completely follow you and I would guess that the swing arm pressure is probably not more than 5 psi. Hi Mark - Yes, the site has been down most of the day but seems to be up and running now. | ||

Well, the problem you have with doing something similar for the pre-'06 bikes is that the mechanical element can't flex, and the dipstick doesn't go straight into the oil reservoir like on the newer bikes...so is it possible to mount the element/gauge in such a way that it can rotate freely inside the fitting that actually screws into the swingarm? If the element was curved or angled properly (maybe not possible with that type of gauge?), it could be inserted into the swingarm and then the fitting serves to tighten the whole thing in place without the element actually rotating relative to the swingarm. I don't know if it's possible or not, but asking questions is how we learn! =D | ||

Hello Super Dave - Yes, the black portion is very sturdy. You could thread in and attach a lug to which you could use a safety clip on the end of your safety wire. I race too but your motivation is better! And, we sand blast a zone that represents "good" oil level.  Bryan - I'm pickin' up what you're layin' down. That's an interesting idea and I understand now why you asked about the internal pressure in the swing arm. It's worth looking into. Thanks, Keith | ||
