I am awaiting my service manual in the mail. Anyone know of a good online reference or tutorial for the changing of the front brake pads?

I have never changed the Inside out front brake set up, there seems to be 3 times as many bolts at the front brakes on my triumph. So I figured go at it safe.

I want to inspect the current pads, they are looking thin & we have a big ride this weekend, I am patiently waiting for my new Lyndols from American Sportbike, hoping I can squeeze some life out of the current stock pads!

Per my '08 service manual:

Remove the right side front fender to get at the caliper bolts, if on an XB12X.

Loosen the pin hanger (in the center of the caliper), but do not remove.

Rotate the wheel so the caliper is centered between rotor mount bolts.

Remove the lower caliper mounting bolt.

Loosen, but do not remove the upper caliper mounting bolt.

Remove the pin hanger (bolt)

Rotate the caliper counter-clockwise, and remove the pads. The inner pad has to be removed through the wheel.

Hope this helps. Dave

Do you have the ability to remove the front wheel your self because you will have to do that to change the pads. Once that’s done it’s a pretty easy job. There is only one bolt that holds the pads in the (the small alien in the center of the caliper). I use my finger to push the pistons back one at a time before I put the new pads on (that one I learned the hard way). O and you don’t have to remove the caliper to do the job.

I've changed my own pads, and the front wheel definitely does NOT have to come off.

What AkBuell forgot to mention is that when you replace the bolts, you should LocTite them first.

Jaimec,

Does the type of LocTite matter, i.e., blue/red?

I suspect it is blue...

Good God I am glad the following posts cleared up taking the wheel off???? Taking a wheel off to change brake pads, whew... & I turned down the KTM 990 because it required too much to work on it ; )

Thanks, I am going to try to pull the caliper off tonight & inspect the pads to ensure they are good until my Lyndal Golds finally come in, I am going to try & cleans some of the residue off the rotor also.

Oh & for the records, always use locktite Blue... Red is not permanent, but damn its a battle to get it off once its on!

Front wheel does not need to be removed. Very easy job.

Sorry, I forgot. My bad!! Per the service manual:

After the pads are in, install the pin hanger.

Rotate the caliper back into position. Using red Loctite, tighten both bolts to 35-37 ft-lbs.

Tighten the pin hanger to 11-14 ft-lbs.

I've always used blue loctite, and never had a problem with the bolts loosening up. And it saves me the trouble of looking for a hammer the next time I need to remove the bolt, too!

Thanks everyone.... yeah silly easy... got the pads off, they have some life left, cleaned everything with brake cleaned & scrubbed the rotor down with brake cleaner. Its stops better & the pulsing appears to be gone. I am anxious for the LYndal gold pads, but in the meantime I got a bandaid on the front brakes :-)

Yep, they DEFINITELY specify "Red." I have no idea why, but I used blue and the bolts have not loosened up.

Has anyone actually USED red loctite after replacing their pads??

I can tell you that they used RED when they put them on, I had to beat the wrench with a Mallet Violently to take out the Caliper Bolts. GOod God... I think Blue is a safe bet, I have been using Blue on Brake Calipers for the last 16 years of my life I have had a driver license! Nothing ever fell off.. that also includes 13 years of motorcycle riding... go BLue :-)

Yea, I have used RED and mumble and grumble every time I am cleaning threads before the installation. I believe from this point, I will use only BLUE.

I'm sure the red spec is the result of heavy input from the legal dept, with a minor input from engineering because "aggressive" riders can put a fair amount of heat into the caliper. JMHO

Which spec is used at your car's brakes?
