i find it quite annoying when i stop for gas, and have to get "motorcyliclingly naked" just to top off.
i don't have any mortal enemies looking to sabotage my bike, i don't think that even with rising gas prices, some one would look to a motorcycle to score some free fuel.

any body know if there are compatible aftermarket, key-less gas caps? or if the blast's cap will work?
or anything else....preferably inexpensive of course.... and not comprised of duct tape

Why not just rig up your existing gas cap to open with a permanent key?

Head off to your local lock smith, purchase a Volvo 240 key (same as our buell keys) have it cut, then shave the back half down.
If you did it right the key would sit in the cap with only a little bit sticking out. Then find someway to secure the key in the lock (super glue?), that way someone couldn't use it on your ignition.
Voila keyless gas cap. : )

Take your second key and leave it in the cap?

I don't get it Don't you guys shut your motor off when you fill up? The key is what, two inches away from the fill cap.

Grandstand design is the only place I know of as well. They are very nice and great quality. I've been contemplating this for awhile too, because I am worried that one day my key will break off in that lock cylinder.

25,000 miles on my XB12Ss, and the key gives no indication it'll ever "break off" in the gas cap.

Better yet, 118,000 miles on my K1200LT which also has a locking gas cap. Still have the original key and the original gas cap.

People worry about the STRANGEST things, sometimes...

Well everyone has different issues than other people. My key fits very tightly into my cylinder. It's not really a strange thing to worry about on my end, because if I am 100 miles from home and my key breaks off, it will become an issue. I also have 27k on my bike.

i was really hoping that the blast cap would be a quick swap... i'm too cheap for the 130 bones.
thanks for the link anyway, Donald.

my key is pretty stiff in the cap, but didn't think it'd ever break off. putting a permanent key in the gas cap (buying a different-keyed cap) would work... maybe i should just stop whining. it takes more thought and energy to piss and moan about it on badweb than to just put the key in and twist.

i'll lube it up with some WD or if i can find my tube of graphite powder... i swear that thing grows legs and walks away!

I have never thought of wanting a keyless gas cap, but I have wished for a hinged cap.

ooh, hinged! that'd be nice. maybe run some fine chain/locking cable form the bottom of the cap and rivet it to the inside lip of the tank?

i usually nestle in in the handlebars... i have only dropped it a few times.

The only problem I've had with locking gas caps is in the winter. Nothing is worse than pulling in to a gas station on fumes, only to find the ****ing lock is frozen solid.

I've lost count how many times I've poured hot coffee all over my gas tank just so I could unlock the gas cap. Of course, the hot coffee just GUARANTEES that the cap is going to freeze up solid again.

I started making squirting WD-40 into the keyhole a weekly ritual from late November through early April and haven't had the problem since.

Under those circumstances, though, I can see the logic behind a keyless gas cap!

I don't understand the OP's OP. . . you have to remove some gear to move the key?

I dunno if this makes a difference at all, but if you don't mind keeping it off your key ring, I find it's pretty easy to get to in any of the coin pockets (even with gloves on) on any of my pants, and that way I don't have keys scratching up the area around the ignition. I can do that while trying to insert the key without looking.

Is having to fumble w/ other keys part of the problem? Or did I just make that up?

Had the same concern with the stiff lock. Service people recommended spray lithium grease. Works well for me.

Lithium grease is a good idea. I've tried wd40, but didn't really feel a difference. Not like this is a top priority or issue, but every time I am far away and trying to carefully remove my key it makes me nervous. I usually do have my spare key with me, but for those times I forget...

I like the stock design. You never leave it behind, and you never have to worry about it damaging your plastics or scratching your paint.

Why not see if there is a fitable model of these:

http://www.autosportcatalog.com/index.cfm?fa=p&pid =4044

It pressurizes and you'd never have to take it off.

Teddagreek... Please correct me if I'm wrong here. I believe the point you are trying to make is that my GSD cap which retails for $129.95 is more expensive than the Vortex cap.

The Vortex cap retails for $39.95 while the base that the cap screws into retails for $66.95. Total cost of a Vortex system is $106.90. Then take into consideration that Vortex doesn't make a cap for the Buell because there are no provisions for mounting the cap base to the XB frame. The only solution would be to cut and weld the top of the frame the way many racers did a few years back. That can become very expensive and way more intrusive project than your regular street rider would be willing to accept.

I'm not saying that my GSD keyless cap is cheap or a bargain, but the price discrepency is not nearly as large as you may think. Our cap is designed to be removed with a 1/4 turn and works with an internal spring mechanism that replicates the tension of the OEM cap exactly. It fits in the stock location with no alterations to the frame. We believe that the approx $24 premium for our cap is reasonable given the small quantities that we produce.

Thanks, Pete

i have a street 1125r and a track 1125r. i have the Grandstand designs keyless cap that i picked up from Pete and Seth at Road America on the street bike and i am very pleased with it. i don't like the mandatory lock function of the stock cap and i wish i had put the Grandstand cap on the track bike a while ago as last trackday i lost my only key to the bike. hot wire to start was no problem, but i couldn't put gas. lucky for me the key was in my yard when i returned from the track. i am buying another keyless cap from GSD.

GSD cap is the way to go. I have purchased a few things from Pete over there and I have been happy with all of them. I have two of the gas caps and need to order a third. You could also offset the cost by selling your stock one. By choosing to ride a Buell you have (knowingly or not) set yourself up for a very small aftermarket. A good portion of the market that is there is "Buell People" making things that they could not buy elsewhere. The profit margin on short run parts can't be too high either and there just aren't enough Buells out there to demand the supply needed for huge runs that would mean cheaper parts.
