I just did my 06 XB12Ss on Thursday. Knowledge Vault has many good threads. It is also detailed in the shop manual which I suggest you get for official procedure. Below is totally unofficial fluid change procedure, follow at your own risk. I used Amsoil 20w50 Synthetic for both engine and trans. 1)Ride bike for 10 minutes to get oil hot. Engine oil; Drain the swingarm oil tank. Clean plug, reinstall with new o-ring. Torque, use german spec, gudentight. Remove the chin fairing, remove filter, clean filter mount, fill new filter 1/2 full, 4oz, install filter. Fill swingarm oil tank with 2qt 4oz (2.5 qt total including filter oil) Trans fluid; Drain plug beneath left foot peg. Put aluminum foil on muffler to keep it clean of oil. Clean plug, reinstall with new o-ring. Torque, use german spec, gudentight. Remove clutch inspection cover (above left peg, 3 bolts). Fill with 1 qt through clutch plate window, long narrow funnel helps. Replace clutch inspection cover gasket, reinstall. There is mention of Loctite for the threads in the shop manual also. Rear stand helps too. Tough to get all the trans oil in on a kickstand supposedly.  | ||

The recommended Loctite product is not one of their normal thread lockers (red or blue) but is basically teflon pipe thread sealant. The O-ring on the plug should provide an oil-tight seal, but it doesn't hurt to put a little sealant on the plug. You won't feel the urge to snug it down just a little more (which can lead to disaster) if you use the sealant. | ||

Thread locker needs clean/dry threads to work. I can't see anyone getting the threads completely clean or dry. I used the permatex pipe thread sealer (basically liquid teflon tape). Put a 2x4 under the kickstand if you don't have a rear stand. That should allow you to fill the primary to the proper level. Just don't bump into the bike. | ||

Is there any chance you could re-use the clutch inspection cover gasket? I would like to change my trans fluid this weekend but there is no dealership near by so I would have to wait for delivery of the gasket. | ||

I have reused my gasket a couple times now and haven't had a problem. Of course if it tears during removal.... I always have a spare or two on hand. | ||

Clutch inspection cover can be re-used several times ,,,,don't HAVE to remove lower cowl to change engine oil filter...I just remove bolts on r/h side. ('05 XB12S) | ||

When checking the oil level with the dipstick, is the bike suppose to be level (like on a 2x4), or are you suppose to check the level from a kickstand resting position. I was able to change the fluids on my own just fine, this is the only issue I ran into. If the reading is suppose to be done with the bike level, then I am low, but from a rest on the kickstand, I am right at the level I should be. | ||

Be sure you check it hot. You should be fine. | ||
