I was at Biker Bobs HD in Taylor MI on Thursday night last during a MSF course. The guy heard my Drummer and complimented it and then started observing my other mods, tail light LEDs, A.S.B. levers/pegs and then saw the Pegasus Right Side Scoop and made the above comment. Also stated that he had done a manual fan override switch and runs it all the time riding on his Firebolt.

My bike does behave differently now with the RSS on it. The fan never runs while riding and only runs for about 90 seconds on engine shutoff instead of the previous unscooped 3 minutes.

What say you badweb? Am I overcooling?

It's not that it overcools the rear cylinder, it overcools the fuel rail so the fuel doesn't vaporize properly.

Wait, wait, wait.

This guy runs his fan ALL THE TIME, and he's telling you YOU'RE overcooling?

>.>

<.<

HAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAA!

...in other news, look me up sometime for a ride, Postban. I'm trying to expand my repertoire of local guys to spend a weekend day tooling around the admittedly boring Michigan countryside.

Are you sure about that?

There was an editorial in Fuell about that, what issue, I do not recall, but it said basically what Jaimec said.

On a side note, I've gotten to a point on this board that the "Beating a Dead Horse" posts deserve a "Beating a Dead Horse" of their own. Who cares if its been covered, either help, or don't read the thread.

No it doesn't. How the factory came up with that excuse is beyond me, but it certainly isn't true. I have never heard of a single bike having problems caused by fitting a right side scoop...ever.

Fall 2007 Fuell:

quote:

SCOOP ENVY
Q Abe, what can you tell us about the “right side air scoop” on
the XBs? I’ve seen people fit larger ones (near mirror images
of the left side) in an attempt to increase cooling capacity.
It seems the smaller one will allow for an increased air
velocity and potentially more cooling. What’s the deal?
– Ryan, Lightning® XB12Scg owner
A The intent of the right side air scoop is to get better airflow over
the fuel rail when the fan is on (at low speed). Getting proper
airflow to the fuel rail is important in order to prevent vapor-lock
during extended idle or parade duty in hot ambient temperatures.
It turns out that if this scoop has too big of an opening, the airflow
is not directed to the fuel rail as effectively. In our testing, a right
side air scoop created as a mirror image of the left hurt fuel rail
temperatures at idle.
The left side air scoop was shaped to direct air to the rear cylinder
and is very effective at doing that. During our high-speed, hotambient
testing, the front and rear spark-plug base temperatures
are virtually identical, whereas on the old tube-twin bikes there was
a 100 Degree Fahrenheit difference (rear running hotter).

Trojan,

It certainly is true, you freakin' troll. How dare you call us liars; where the hell are your credentials?! The RSS was initially in the design, so both sides would match cosmetically, but had to be removed for a specific issue, namely the fuel rail. Your attitude towards Buell's engineering staff is disgusting.

The article in fuel is saying that it will UNDERcool the fuel rail. This "could" cause the fuel to vaporize inside the fuel rail resulting in vapor lock. Read carefully! They are saying the RSS is a good thing, it only has a negative impact when it is a mirror (same size) as the LSS. So if you have a RSS that is a mirror, just block some of it off and the issue would be fixed.

Admittedly empirical evidence, but when I last pulled my spark plugs their condition showed that the rear cylinder runs a bit cooler than the front as-is with the stock scoop anyway.

That the fan runs does not mean it is too hot. The fan is just doing its' job to regulate an operating parameter.

Nothing like a good ol' argument about the notorious Right Side Scoop to bring out the inner demons hiding within normally good people!

Personally, I have one. Fuel rail be damned. It's a sport bike, not a Shriner car or a float. When; in the wide, wide world of sports would I EVER be caught in a parade?
Stop & go traffic? I skip the stopping and make with the go.

Fan never runs (NEVER) while the engine is running. Unlike an 07 Firebolt that I've had the chance to ride recently. My fan does run at high speed right after I shut it down and then switches to low speed for a few mins.

Buell has done a magnificent job of engineering the bike I own. But now I own it and I'll do what I please to it.

Guess what? Buell also put on those dorky turn signals, but how many riders took them off?
Headlight mods? Rear fender removal? Changed exhaust?

Just like every rider has his/her own personality, so does every bike. And the conditions we ride them in are very different too.

I imagine Buell has to try to accomodate EVERY conceivable situation and make adjustments to designs where they must. They even have a word for it: homo-something. Which might sound like a joke, but I just can't even remember the word. I learned (guess I didn't learn it after all) while talking to an engineer up at East Troy.

Maybe Postban's fuel rail is getting enough air because he never stays in one place long enough for overheating, or maybe he's just lucky and rides through hot pockets of air all day.

Either way, it's an AIR COOLED engine! How can directing more air over it be that damn harmful? It's not like he's running liquid nitrogen to the back cylinder. Race engine-every number counts. Street riding-comon...

Wow, that turned into a full-fledged rant. Sorry 'bout that guys. I'll go home and flog myself.

Annoy posting was available to anyone but typically used by Possibly Erik or other engineering staff to post here. Whether they actually do or not?????????????????

I suspect that one of the Admins, will be contacting the Annoy poster and ask why he posted posted that way.

The last RSS thread got ugly.

The RSS is like all of the other bits and farkles we put on our bike. If you like it keep it. Add it to the chain, exhaust wrap, thermo blanket, cheese grater and steering damper pile.

yep, to each his own.

Last time this went down, my suspiscion was confirmed that the RSS will cause the rear cylinder/rail to operate at a temperature outside [lower] of the known parameter range of the ecm, which can indeed be bad...

Xl1200R,

How else would you expect someone to react to Trojan saying: "How the factory came up with that excuse is beyond me, but it certainly isn't true."

Sorry, I have no problem with the other prior Anonymous post. Ok, maybe it would be better if we stayed away when people call us liars, but come on, do you really think we are robots?

yeah, yer right (about the fuel rail).

my previous concern had been just for the cylinder temp
which is anecdotally evidenced to be lower (per the fan not running).

I would have expected someone, who by posting anonymously is representing the higher Buell order, would have kept a little more cool.

I would have expected a response like: "You may not have encountered these issues, but in our testing we found this to be the case."

A 2 minute internet search shows that Trojan's hometown of Darlington, England has an average high temp in July of a mere 68 degrees F, so I'm sure they'd never see the kind of ambient temps to induce this condition.

And yes, I understand that it's just a checkbox and anyone can use with reason.

But this subject, and the part of the Anony quote which reads, "How dare you call us liars" tells me this is a Buell engineer, technician, etc.

Whoa, virtual sh!tstorm ^ (goes great with the badweather theme btw)

I have a remote thermometer that I can hook to an item with an alligator clip. Measures temp at that point. I will try a few measurements scooped and unscooped, moving and stationary soon as I can.
It worked previously to show the effectiveness of a cold air setup I made for an 03 Cobra in '02.

How do you know the cooling fan comes on when you're riding?

I don't think my 'bolt is too loud but I'm pretty sure I've never heard it.

I'm thinking that I would be listening for the same sound that goes on after I shut the bike down?
