I'm new to the whole H-D V-twin experience and was wondering if this is normal. When cold, my XB9S makes some noise from the bottom end. It's a clunking or hollow-knocking noise. The noise disapears once the engine has reached operating temperature. The noise is loud and deep enough to be the crankshaft. Since I've never had a bike with ball/roller bearings on the crank I don't know if this is normal.

Please advise,

Thanks in advance,
Paul in MI

Hmmmm....

Without actaully hearing it, it's hard to say... what your describing sounds fairly normal.... If you've got a dealer near by take it to them for a listen.... keep in mind the XB motors are somewhat noisy (mechanical ticks and clicks.. injector, valves, cam, etc,)....

The bike has always made the same noise since I bought it. Now that it's ~40F degrees in the morning, it just makes more (a lot more) of the same noise.

Thanks,

Check the primary chain tension to rule that out first.
If it's made the noise since new, and if it's still under the original warranty, take it in to the dealership and ask someone there to listen to it.

I'd take it to the dealership, but it only does it when cold -- so I'd have to leave it overnight. That, plus it's 100+ miles roundtrip to my preferred dealer makes it a PITA.

I adjusted the primary chain tension less than 2000 miles ago. Do they go out of adjustment that quickly? I'll check it again tonight once the bike cools down.

Thanks,

On my M2 I had to adjust the primary chain in the first 500 miles, again at less than 2000 miles and I usually check it at least every 3000 or so or whenever I happen to open up the inspection port. On a new bike with a new chain I'd say definitely check it now. How many total miles are on the bike?

2850 miles. Last checked at 1000 miles. 20W50 Mobil1 in tranny.

Taking your advice, I checked the primary. A bit loose. Tightened it up to 3/8" freeplay and the noise quieted down a lot. Still there, but much, much quieter. 'Guess that solves my problem.

Thanks!

What are the specs for the primary chain? Is it the same as the tubers? I don't have the manual yet.

it's 1/2" to 3/8" freeplay cold.... make sure you find the tightest point to measure from though...

Thanks, thought it might be the same as my M2.
