I was really trying to avoid this post, but couldn't find it through a search.

Drained and changed the primary/gear fluid. Used Mobil 75/90. Manual calls for one quart to bring the fluid up to the bottom of the clutch diaphragm return spring. The figure shown appears to show the fluid level should be at the bottom of the bracket that holds the end of the clutch cable, just short of it spilling out. Problem is, it took damn near 2 quarts to get it to that level. Am I reading this wrong? I haven't fired her up yet, and won't until I get some feedback. Any help would be appreciated.}

Blackhat,

I'm looking at the manual, page 1-23, and it says the primary oil level should be at the bottom of the clutch diaphram spring -- not the bottom of the bracket/arm that holds the clutch cable. The bike should also be level.

The clutch diaphram spring is the big, flat cylinder BEHIND the bracket/arm that holds the clutch cable.

Hope this helps,
Paul in MI

And that's about where it was at with 1 QT. Thanks a bunch, I'll drain her and refill. A good example of why we have boards like this. Keep guys like me from expensive mistakes. Thanks again,

Blackhat.. a turkey baster or one of those infant "snot sucker" things at just about any drug store will let you take some out through the derby cover without draining it all, or fighting that drain plug out from under the exhaust...

If its an XB, there should be no problem w/the exhaust in the way..... just open her up (when on the kickstand) and the fluid will drain out without hitting anything..... The primary isn't too picky about the level (just as long as its at the minimum - 1QT) a little extra won't hurt....
