I love my red 2006 Firebolt. I just don't like the translucent orange trim. Windscreen and decals are easily fixed but what's the story on changing rim colours. Do I just wheel it into a paintshop and get them to powdercoat a new color? And if anyone has photos of a red Firebolt that has been de-oranged, I'd love to see them. Black rims? Red rims? Alloy looking rims? |

If you were closer, I would trade you for my black ones. Its a shame you are in NZ. |

The powdercoat holds paint very well. The only special treatment I would recommend is to sand all of the powdercoat off of the edge of the rim where it gets rubbed by the tire installation tool. But all in all, re-powdercoating is probably better, trading wheels with someone is better yet! |

i would definatly recommend sanding/sandblasting/beadblasting the rims. the reason the factory powder coat chips off so easily on the lips is because the powder coating got put over a polished lip. they are still exactly like the factory silver rims. they just get powder coated on top of. which means there is nothing for it to dig into and hold on. my 12 with powder coated rims. i have about $80-90 bucks into these rims, which included sandblasting and powdercoating. Definitely looks better with the black wheels! Having two colors, red and amber, that are very similar to each other on the same bike makes it look kind of crummy. |

Well how difficult is it to sandblast the wheels yourself, or do the places that powdercoat often sandblast as well? I am considering getting my silver ones changed/powdercoated black as well. |

Scbuellkat, most powdercoat shops have sandblasters on hand. They may charge you more to sandblast and powdercoat versus you bringing in something ready to be coated, but some shops include that in the cost of the coating. |

Huh, wonder what amber wheels would look like with black plastics -- photoshop anyone? Thats the way I would go -- those ambers are pretty and an amber/black would be nice... ...and less attractive to the police than the red, which is why I am not going full red -- seriously, talked to some cops recently and they said they pull over red vehicles more often because studies show they are operated by people more prone to do stupid stuff and brake the law. I'll skip the profiling, thank you very much! Nice bike BTW Rice, very slick! Any reason you didn't relocate the plate to the undertail? It's legal where I am so I did it, love the look! |

Olinxb12r, what is your exhaust coated with? I did mine in high temp black paint and it has held up for 20K so far. The red and black looks awesome!! |

Y'all talk about "sandblasting" but I think you are really referring to "beadblasting" with glass or plastic media. Either way; I was told by a local powder coat co. that it is very difficult to remove powder coat from aluminum because the coating is so hard and the underlying aluminum is relatively soft. A careful operator may be able to pull it off but several guys I talked to recommended chemical/heat stripping followed by new powder coat. 'Course, a scuff and spray would probably do the job. Just wouldn't be as durable as powder coat. Appearance would be fine. |

Better to trade IMHO -- as long as Buell makes the color you like it would work! Anyone want to trade those new pinstripe blacks for my reds? Probably not. Oh well... I have a coat of high temp black -- seems to hold up well to anything but direct contact scraping, wouldn't mind putting on powder coat or something more durable though... |
