Hello. I just bought a brand new 08 XB9 City cross and I absolutely love it! I have a question, though: the throttle "slips" about 1/8" or so when I pull it. You know, it is just a little "loose". I don't know much about any bikes, let alone Buells. Is this normal? Is there something I can do to adjust it? It's just buggin me to feel how loose it is... I want more response, ya know? Anyhow, any help would be great.

The throttle cables will always have a little play if set up properly. A little play in the cable helps with the bike not being so "jerky" over uneven ground and minimizes the chances of the throttle being affected when you move the bars lock to lock.

There is a fairly confusing and involved process in the manual for adjusting that slack out. I've tried to follow it a couple of times, and am never quite satisfied with the results, and have ended up leaving it too tight once, which prematurely frayed both cables.

Now I just do it by feel. It'll help if you pull the airbox baseplate the first time so you can see what is happening.

The bars at full left lock are where it is fussy, the cables will bind or hang up there first. If I get the slack out to my satisfaction, I get a *slight* hang up on the return on full left lock, which I live with. In 24k miles on the XB, I think I only experienced it twice, and neither time was any kind of problem.

Based on observing hacks on dirt bikes, I am thinking next time to adjust the play out of the "pull to accelerate" cable, and leave the "pull to decelerate cable" slacker (emergency failsafe).

The cables could be bound up by damage or goo as well, or may be fraying and just need replaced. They are a wear item on all bikes eventually.

Thanks, guys. From what you've said, I think i'm gonna leave them be for now. I just thought that maybe there was an error when the dealer set it up. I don't know enough to go jackin' w/ stuff and would almost surely end up leaving it worse than when I found it. Thanks again.
