I was looking at several tank bags this afternoon and I know that in order to use one on my xb, I would have to modify it. I was kinda fond of the Icon urban tank bag that attaches with magnets. my question is, can anyone give me any sort of input as to what might happen if i fasten some sort of metal inside of the airbox in order to use the magnetic tank bag? i havent put much thought into it but I was wondering if it was possible. please let me know so that I may have a fringed tank bag to match my chaps for me and my xb Mookie |

Are you going to be wearing your GoGo dancing boots with your fringed tank bag? |

Mookie, Mookie, Mookie...you're breaking the cardinal rule, ADDING WEIGHT! LOL...that being said, I don't think there's necessarily any problem with doing that, as long is it's secured well and isn't going anywhere. I wonder just how much metal you'd have to put in there in order to give it a good grip, though? Bryan |

Mookie, I have a magnetic tank bag. I don't think it would stick without direct contact with metal. I don't think putting metal under the plastic air box cover would hold it. I just added straps to mine. The magnetic bag was great on my Ninja though. |

Why not just find someone with a laser or waterjet machine and have them cut out some Buell tank lettering in steel, you could also do up some belt buckle patterned stickons in steel as well to secure the southend of the bag. No bag and it looks like somewhat normal tank lettering and graphics, only the stickons are magnetic. Hmmmm, maybe I'm onto something here, could be a business venture, too bad I don't have time or resources to pursue it. Just give me royalties if someone runs with this idea, okay? Thank$. |

Mike, one of our Mob members had a buddy laser cut the Buell logo on his bike, it looks real sharp. L8R, JM |

I never thought about it before, but you probably could JBWeld some strong magnets inside the airbox cover (AKA tank) that line up with the magnetic tank bag magnets. That could make a pretty cool pretty easily removable setup. Don't know how thick the plastic is, but the fact that you have strong magnets reaching for strong magnets would probably cover it.

bryan, I wasnt talking about much weight. just enough to get the bag to hold. I am concerned about the velocity of the air distorting the metal inside and possibly pulling it away though. like I said before... I havent had the chance to put too much though into this yet. |

Just a side thought, but with the XB being downdraft fuel injected, and with some electronics being affected by magnetic fields and such, is there any possibility of the magnets of the tank bag affecting any control modules or fuel feed components of the XB's system? Also, as one who has carried electronic storage media in a tank bag before, keep in mind that magnets have a negative effect on the storage memory system of electronic media such as floppie disks and possibly digital cameras and such. Anyway, I'm in the middle of a work related firestorm and have to get back to the battle before the systems go down for a few days or more. bye....................... |

Mikej, I use my magnetic tank bag on my XB all the time with no problem. I have straps that hold it on, but the magnets are still in the bottom of the bag. I have also carried my laptop, digital camera, and digital video camera in it with no problem whatsoever. It definitely does not interfere with the bike running. |

Okay, it was just a thought. I've worked around some bigger magnets and have erased several credit cards accidently before (even almost had the keys pulled right out of my pocket once when standing next to a prototype MRI machine, oops), so sometimes my thoughts run to the outer limits. I would be more than willing to try this, but my question remains for me of how well will jbweld hold the magnets to the inside of the airbox and is it strong enough to keep the velocity of the airflow from pulling them down and damaging my air filter?

I'd test the theory with some duct tape, then use an epoxy if you find it works OK. The magnets would be between the airbox and airbox cover so getting sucked in wouldn't be an issue. |

duh yeah I didnt think of that. for some reason i was envisioning darths setup without the airbox. If I keep saying things like this on the board I think im gonna get downgraded to chaps wearing status |

Yeah, if you remove the top of the airbox then it's something to consider. Pretty sure you could find an adhesive that could withstand even that. |

Liquid Nails, baby! Mookie, I've gone back to a completely sealed airbox for the time being. When I come back from Japan I'm going to get a stock velocity stack as well as a 9R and 12R cover to experiment with. Then I just need to pony up the dough for an hour on the dyno and we'll see what the best combo is. Bryan |
