I saw on the news this morning that an impaired driver ran over two motorcyclist by the Staten Island Ferry terminal in Manhattan, and the bike pinned under the car was a black Buell XB (not sure if it was an R/S/X). One rider was killed, and one is hurt pretty bad in the hospital. I seem to remember a gentleman on here from SI that owned a Black Uly...my thoughts and prayers go out to both families of this tragedy. |

Thanks Mike. I am alive and well in Sag Harbor, about a hundred miles from this sad accident. My only problem is trying to get three projects done while checking the Buell site for the new models. |

Someone died, and someone else is seriously injured. This is an horrific tragedy, regardless of who they are |

Yes Tramp, of course my condolences go out to all who have suffered. My most immediate concern was for my immediate friend, Jon. Thanks for pointing out my glaring lack of concern for fellow riders. Mike. |

I just got back from messing around in the city, parked my bike and turned the news on. I saw the bike. Scared the shit out of me. Another motorcyclist in a totally separate incident was also killed yesterday uptown. Makes you think... |

We've had so many accidents and deaths here in Conn. there talking helmets again. Not that I care about helmets. I wear one. Have you noticed the number of bikes on the road is way up? Maybe it gas prices but I see 10 times the bikes I did only 4 years ago on my daily commute to work. To paraphrase the gun people "If everyone was on a bike we'd all be safe." |

I don't see many motorcycles. I see tons of scooters. The number of scooters I see vs motorbikes is staggering. |

I hope this guy gets what he deserves - murder charges. I hope he subsequently rots in jail and is raped daily. |

Very sad indeed....there are a ton of New riders out there, including myself, but it's the cagers we need to fear. It seems they "Never See Us"....be safe out there so we can all enjoy what we love to do - Ride. |

Many years ago, there was a study of bike accidents, ironically called the Hurt report. It, and updates, are available on line. It is still the best study done and nobody has felt a need to redo it. The big thing about it is that the victim is on a dark coloured bike. The major factor is that the car driver did not personally know anyone who had a bike. So, since light coloured bikes are also hit, the most important thing you can do is let as many people you can make contact with know you have a bike. They need to make that identification with somebody in order to see the bike and its rider. |

That's a Buell under that car . . . I posted photos in another thread today. I've seen WAY TOO many of these lately. The L.I.E. was closed for 4 hours on Friday a couple weeks ago with what I've come to refer to as "splitter splatter". . . it's becoming common place. The local scooter population is increasing at a rate in excess of 1,000/week. So too are the number of cute little gals (I've been snapping photos) in skirts and heels for speeding. Amazing times. . . have me riding away from, not toward, the city. |

Yeah Court, I've noticed that too. Scooters galore. Hopefully they are all taking some sort of course on how not to ride. I saw a woman try to squeeze between parked cars and a slow moving bus on 2nd ave the other day. Not smart. |

Street Riders Mantra: "Right of Way goes to Gross Tonnage"... First 6 months of riding is when you are most at risk of getting involved in an accident. After the first year it drops drastically. Since we have so many new riders on the road due to the recent sustained increase in gas mileage I would predict that the accident rate will remain high for a number of months. It takes a certain mentality and discipline (maturity?) to survive commuting with a motorcycle or scooter. |
