2008 BUELL XB12scg: Can't get a consistent oil reading... The check-ball was replaced and still the same thing. Buell Tech says there's nothing else they can do. #%!@ My previous XB (2003) had no such issue...and other XB owners I know seem to be doing OK with with oil consumption and oil level variations. Anybody else with a similar problem? |

Apparently not. Good luck. |

The tech that did my 10k put 6-8ounces maybe too much in my bike. I had to check and check and siphon a bit. I believe that the following can effect your reading quite a bit; how much time elapses after shut down how spirited a ride prior to checking level (sloshing) ? how level a surface your on This is just my opinion. |

Contacting the dealer management... then I plan to contact Buell customer support. Nobody should have to live with this situation. I took more controlled readings by running the bike for exactly ten minutes. First low and then high... then lower, then somewhere in between. I can't control the outside temp so the oil is probably slightly different temps each time. |

What check ball did they replace? I also seem to have inconsistent oil level readings. I thought it was just because sometimes I don't let it warm up enough. |

The check ball that is located in the oil filter mount. It supposed to keep the oil from running back into the engine. The check ball was changed - NO CHANGE in the condition. The readings are still inconsistent. I have no idea how much oil is in the bike. One time its low, another its high, and everywhere in between. The first time this happened, the HOT oil was was checked about 4-5 mins after fueling and the swing arm showed NO OIL. I put over a half quart to get the level up to the cross-hatched area. The oil was subsequently blown out into the airbox. Now I take a reading IMMEDIATELY after shut-down. I run the bike for another two minutes and IMMEDIATELY check again...then again. Of course its a slightly different level each time but I get a better idea of the real oil level. I fill it JUST ENOUGH to get it into the cross-hatched area... VERY FRUSTRATING. Buell Tech folks told the dealer they would not authorize any more work on the bike. Basically telling the customer and the dealer that I should live with it. The wife (it her bike) is not happy. The dealer General Manager has been contacted an he will address this with Buell... Standing by for more information. If anyone has similar issues - please post here. Not burning it (no smoke)... not breathing it...airbox is now dry. The oil system is just storing it in the motor... |

THanks Nick. Thanks a lot. Almost 1000 miles on my XBr this season and i checked the level immediately after 120 miles yesterday.I added a full quart to bring it to the full mark(bottom of cross hatching). Now i might look forward to it puking oil just like my X1 does when overfilled. Before adding though, the dipstick was bone dry. |

It's interesting that you say that. I've always thought that I had consumption issues, but mine doesn't leak, it doesn't smoke (that I know of), and the airbox is virtually oil free. But the oil levels are all over the place. |

I just go by my initial fill, I add the right amount and every 400-500 miles I check again, usually the comsuption is so minor that I never have to add any to top it off. The way I check my level, after a long ride, at least 30 minutes of running time, shut off the engine and let it seat for about 15 minutes had always given a accurate reading, hopes this help....... |

Maybe Eric has used the idea of the mining companies. They large trucks have oil resevoirs that pump the required oil into the motor to a level and burn off the excess by injecting it into the engine. |

Possibly a broken or improperly functioning reed assembly in the crankcase. Disconnect the return line at swingarm [swingarm will not drain bcause of return tube in swingarm] start motor and observe flow. Completely remove return line blow compressed air thru it , also the tube in swingarm clearing any blockage. Drop oil pump check gerotors for damage, look, feel around for broken reed petal up thru oil pump hole , while it is removed. The feed side check ball that has been replaced is to prevent the motor from wet sumping during extended non operating peroids. My 05 XBSX has very stable oil level readings ,varyies approx. 1/4 inch hot to cold checks. The conditions you describe should be a serious concern. |

I find the oil level difficult to read on my 08 Scg also. Don't know why as I followed the directions to a T and the readings are inconsistent. I had a friends 03 and did not have the same issue. |

my 08 scg oil level is right on the money and seldom uses any... now, if it would run without stumbling, but nah! the "surgin general"... |

Heres what I do. I remember exactly where the oil level is after I do an oil change and fill with correct amount. Then I only check the oil about every 500 miles when its stone cold. It should be the same level as when you checked it after your oil change with the correct amount of oil used. If not, add oil til it is. This eliminates most of the temp problem and any froathing the oil might do after a ride. (Message edited by theroamr on July 24, 2008) |

ugh..first the poor gas mileage now this.. my XB also suffers from this.. its' an 08 xb12scg.. i drained the oil at 200 miles and poured in exactly what was required. I tried to find the volume using the dipstick, but it reads "empty".. this kinda stuff sure doesnt inspire confidence |
