Went to go for a ride today, turned on the key, switched to run, fuel pump did it's thing, hit the loud button-- nothing. didn't even turn over. It's on the tender now, light is yellow so it's charging. does this sound like a battery issue or should i look else where? 2005 xb9sx, little over 8k and original battery. | ||

Battery is the place to start, battery terminal tight, then fuses, then solenoid, does the solenoid tick fast and loud? I'd start there. If the battery is toast and not even making the solenoid tick then it might not even hold a charge to start your bike. You can jump it with your car, not started, just hook up and remove the jumpers right away once the bike starts. But the good way is to test the battery load if you have the means. Its time for a new battery anyhow, surprised it would last that long. | ||

checked the fuses, all good. it's not even ticking when you hit the starter, it does nothing. does the batter just decide "i'm spent" and die? I've had no issues at all with starting til now. | ||

Doesn't sound like a battery to me, they usually give warning signs, and even then you should hear the solenoid clicking after having it on the charger for awhile. I'd begin by checking to see if you have power getting to the starter. Let us know when you figure it out. Do you hear the fuel pump doing it's thing when you turn the key on? Do you have lights and turn signals? | ||

I'm not that familiare with the location of the parts but... You could put an ohm meter across the solenoid contacts and then press the button to see if the starter switch is working properly. If it is then the battery is most likely toast. And yes, it seems at least in my experiance that when a battery wants to die, they just die. | ||

If the fuel pump does not come on CHECK YOUR RELAYS. They are under the seat on an XBS, I think. | ||

Thanks for all the tips. Apparently my stupid pills have worn off. After an hour on the tender, I went and checked it out. Light was green, turned on the ignition, run switch, hit the button, nuthin. Upon further inspection, I discovered the neutral light was not on. Hmmmmm, I NEVER leave the bike in gear in the garage, but I guess I did last time I rode. Put it in neutral, fired right up. I was in such a hurry to get some where I ignored the simple stuff. Let the ripping begin, as I go take more stupid pills.  | ||

Funny, I sorta did that with my riding mower last weekend. Changed the oil, cleaned the plug, clean air filter, sprayed it all down to maker shine, then turned it on and it ran for like 5 seconds then died and woulndnt start. Tried for about 30 minutes and put it on the charger. BING!!  Looked in the gas tank and it was dry as a bone, filled it, and started right up...like Rocketsprink says "Shit Happens". | ||

That happened to me only my switch went bad. So i have to pull the clutch in now to start it. | ||

Im pretty sure the yellow push button switch has some corrosion on it from the elements. Its pretty easy to take the switch apart and clean the contact points. My bike is the same year and about the same miles that happened to me. About a 10 minute fix with some fine sandpaper. | ||
