Anybody got or know where I can get a M2 shop owners service manual. The owners manual is a joke. I'm the new kid on the Buell block and there ain't a service center within 50 miles of me. I just want to change the oil/filter and the only capacity I get out of the manual is 2 quarts and no further instructions procedures to do a complete oil change...only for draining the tank under the seat. Could somebody elaborate... |

There is nothing complicated about it. Drain the tank per your manual. Dont forget to put the plug back in when your done. Remove the old filter, pour 4 oz of oil into the new filter, lubricate the seal lightly & install the filter. Add 2 quarts of oil to the tank & you are done. |

You forgot about cleaning up the mess when he removes the filter without a dribble bag or without drainpunching it. Ben, The owners manual is just that, an owner's manual. It is not meant to be a service manual. It answers some basic questions and such, but assumes you'll be taking the bike into a dealership for any service work. Basically it's there so that when a dealership tries to charge you for 5 quarts of oil you can point to the section in the manual and ask them where the extra oil went (probably onto the floor when they forgot to put the drain plug back in ). Contact Daves or see your nearest dealership for both the service manual and the parts manual, you may need both. I just wish they'd combine both into one book, it would make things so much easier (and probably less expensive as well). |

I have a well used service manual for a '99 M2 I don't need anymore, pages all ok just a pretty rough cover. It would have more in common with your M2 than it does with my XB. How about $25 shipped? |

What's wrong with us owners changing all 5 qts. Is it that complicated? I've been changing oil in every vehicle I've owned. Does't take a rocket scientist. If I drain it all out...Do I just add the 5qts into the tank under the seat...or is there another filler area for the motor as well..or does the 5qts. of oil from the tank makes it way there as it's being filled?...strange animal this Buell... I've got an Intruder VS1400 and an F1..nothing complicated there. And one last quest. for the group. Any positive or negative issues on using synthetic motorcycle oil...only negative input I've ever gotten about using it was from the Honda dealer..said not good thing to do with the F1. Geez..5qts. of 10-40 synthetic oil and filter in hands and both tied behind my back... |

5 quarts of oil? Max with a long filter would be about 2 1/2 quarts. I, as a lot of other people, use Mobil1 15/50 without any problems. Drain it after riding the bike around the block and then refill. Usually about 1/2 way up the dip stick is optimum. |

Ben, I hope you arent serious about the 5 quart deal. The bike only holds 2. Its not a Chevy V8 in there. I already told you all that is involved in the procedure, if its too complicated I would seriously suggest seeing your dealer. |

told everyone I was new buell kid (right 56yrs old) on the block.. Hard to believe only 2 qts...my Intruder & F1 take 4.5qts..(1400cc & 600cc)..and Buell 1203cc with only 2 qts...? Must tax the hell out of the oil.. |

Since nobody else has mentioned it, make sure you check the oil AFTER the bike is warmed up. Failure to do this will result in putting in too much oil, don't ask how I know this. Get the service manual,it is worth it's price in gold if you work on your own bikes. Ride to the edge! Dave Iowa HD/Buell (Buell Cycle Center) |

Bads1: For the record, the XB Service Manual is OUTSTANDING. The OWNERS manual is not intended to convey more than rudimentary information. A service manual is a good thing to have. I'd suggest a parts manual as well. Court |

Really, an F1 holds ~4300cc of oil? That is a very large amount. I am surprised. In any case, Buells have separate oil for the engine while the imports lubricate clutch, engine, and transmission with one single oil supply (can you say contamination?) Also the Buells are dry sump with a remote oil tank, which keep the oil from sitting all in the engine and hot soaking. So, don't worry about holding less oil, it'll be fine. Also, whatever you do, don't add too much, or it'll be squirting out every orifice! And make sure to run your engine then shut off before checking oil level, because if the bike has been sitting, some of the oil can seep into the crankcase sump. Normally, it's not a problem, because as soon as the motor is fired up the excess gets pumped back to the tank. However, if you check your oil and top off the tank when some of it is in the sump, when you fire up the bike, you'll have too much oil, which comes out vents, etc. in a very messy way. A classic line when this happens..."I've just had my oil changed and now something's really wrong with the motor, 'cause it's leaking oil everywhere..." |
