My bike has been running rough (pinging, afterfiring, dramatic drop in mpgs, stalling). I've noticed that octane booster improves these symptoms but only slightly. I replaced the intake seals due to a AFV of 117 and change in RPM when carb cleaner was sprayed around the seals. Lately I've noticed a relationship between the ambient temp and the performance of the bike... lower temp better running. Thinking I was crazy, I asked Skully to hook the bike up to his VSDTS. After a 30 min ride mostly at >70mph (outside temp was around 90degF) I shut the bike off and popped the seat off. By the time the software connected to the ECM, it indicated that the engine temp was 305degF. The following tests were run with the following results:

Fuel Pump... Fail
Injector 1... Fail
Injector 2... Pass
Coil 1... Pass
Coil 2... Fail
AFV... 115
TPS checked fine
No active or archived error codes

So now it gets strange. We left the bike sitting there and just talked for a bit. Came back about 15mins later and was about to leave when, on an whim, I ran the tests again. This time every test passed. We were both left scratching our heads because this bike has been somewhat of an enigma. I leave it to you badweb! Any idea why my baby is so affected by heat?

Maybe you have a flakey ECM or connection to it? If you can get another, try swapping it out and run your driving test again.
Just another $.02

Sean thats a possibility but I still wonder why the high AFV and the difference with octane booster. What could it be trying to correct for?

Any other ideas guys? this is my daily ride and the more gas prices go up, the more I need the bike to be running as best as it can.

Have you checked the timing? Checked the harness to make sure it's not rubbing on something a making a short? Check all the ground connections. I've worked on cars that had corroded or loose grounds that have caused some really strange running problems.

I would definitely suspect an electrical issue here. I have seen the wiring harness to the ecm rub the underside of the seat and cause fuel pump issues. My guess for the lean/high afv condition is that the short is causing the pump to run on less than optimal voltage. Low voltage= low pressure= lean condition. The fact that everything checked out fine after a cool down period is more evidence of an electrical issue. Bike/associated wiring cools off and resistance drops, passes test. Id say careful inspection of the wiring harness associated with the fuel pump is your next step.
Looks like your are up to $.04

Most intermittent hard to track problems like yours are attributable to bad grounds and or broken/bared/shorted wires.

Have you pulled the cover off the wires in the steering neck bracket to where they go under the tank? I had one in there that just barely pulled apart and was doing stupid stuff.

I would unplug and replug every connector on the bike and unscrew, clean, and reattach every ground.

Mine has worn wires bare in three places so far. Under the seat at the ecm plug rubbing the seat. The wire harness crosses over the front cylinder oil breather hose. Where the harness went through the wire loom before it heads out under the front left tank.

Thanks for the suggestions guys.. I did pull off the seat when doing the tests and did notice some rubbed off insulation on the connectors that go to one of the main plugs. Will electrical tape be good enough to protect the wires? I have checked the timing and its fine.. just slightly retarded. I'll check the leads and clean them up if I see anything.

I do have access to an ECM out of a 9 but I don't know if it'll work in a 12. Anyone know if it will?
