The charging system on Lil Blackie seems to have been taken out when the key switch relay shorted, so I ordered a stator and voltage regulator from Appleton.

Does anyone know what size nuts are used to hold on the stator, and the clutch for that matter? I want to make sure I have sockets that are large enough.

Anyone like to offer any tips or things to watch out for? I was planning on just following the Shop Manual, but I know they often take the long way around things.

Any reason to be thinking of replacing the chain adjuster at 13K Miles?

Thanks,
Jonathan

Before you go into replacing the stator, I would check it's output and see if it is grounded. Pretty straight forward with the SM. I'll bet you a cold drink it is your VR, not the stator.

I can't tell you the nut sizes offhand but, the job ain't too bad except for breaking loose the crankshaft nut and then torquing it back down. I bought an electric impact to break the crankshaft and clutch nuts loose.

For torquing you need a 300ft-lb torque wrench since I think the crank nut goes to 240 ft-lb (IIRC). FWIW one of the 2 nuts are left-handed.

Gentleman_jon,

This link has the correct torque values and for nut size do a search for topics of primary gear exchange from XB12 to XB9. I believe I have seen the info there.

Good luck,

CC
I checked the output from the stator, according to the SM.

I got 26 volts a/c and it didn't change when I increased the RPM from 1000 to 2000. I thought that was odd.

I figured if there is any output, it would increase with revs.

Perhaps I measured it wrong.

Any ideas?

It may be an issue of your meter damping the wave form. When I had a suspect stator, the 1st time, it showed a rise in voltage with rpm. The 2nd time no voltage from one phase since the wire was broke.

Maybe ask Zac or one of the other electrical Guru's, I'm only an ME. If I can't bolt it, weld it, beat it back into shape and paint it, it's hard for me to get my brain around it ;+}

Well, it sounds like your stator is okay. I think your supposed to test it at higer revs. though. But you say you have the FSM, what does it say?

How about the VR, what are you getting out of it?

A little troubleshooting is worth a lot of money, time and frustration.

His stator is SHOT! It should be putting out 20vac for every 1k rpm. It should also change with RPM.

The Primary nut is 1 1/8 inch and the nut on the clutch is 30mm. I just did one with a pal the other day.

The tranny nut is reverse thread and you DO NOT NEED TO REMOVE THE CLUTCH PLATES. Just pull the snap ring on the adjuster and the nut is behind it, pull the basket/spring/plates all as one unit.

Inspect your Trans nut before installing it, daves stripped out on the install. Lucky for him I had a spare.

PM me if you need anymore info.

You are there and it is only a few bucks.

Also, while the bike is running what is your voltage DC at the battery, you should be getting at least 14 vdc.

Also check your stator for shorts to ground, and measure the resistance between all 3 terminals, it should be 3 to 5 ohms IIRC across each terminal to the other.

Example, you have 3 terminals, measure short to ground from 1, then 2, then 3. Next measure ohms between 1 and 2, then 1 and 3, then 2 and 3 and you should have close to the same reading in all three terminals.

I dont type what I mean to say well but if you get held up the PM still stands.

My number is in the BRAN too, leave a message if I dont answer with you number, my display is broke and the phone shuts off at random intervals.

Thanks Charlie.

I hope your noggin has healed up. I was thinking of you when I was checking out the GF's Honda accord - she says "sometimes the hood doesn't stay up"

Thanks for all the info.

I will recheck the the voltages.

Basically, when I read the voltage on the battery with the engine running it was just the battery voltage: ie: less than 12.7 volts, going down as the engine ran.

I started the engine, then disconnected the positive, and the engine died. Someone told me if the stator was working the engine could keep running.

Is that right?

Thanks Charlie.

Make sure you have a big enough torque wrench to do the crankshaft nut before you start. The torque requirement for the XB's was changed to ~240 ft-lbs by a factory service bulletin. If yours doesn't go that high, some auto parts stores loan torque wrenches out or you may be able to rent one.
