I'm looking at XB9R. I like my brothers XB12X but it is out of my price range. I have found two low mileage 2003 XB9R each of them have less than 5000 miles on them. One guy is asking $4200 for his it has the Bubba Blackwell race kit. The other one is also a 2003 and that guy is asking $4500 for it. Why is it that I seem to find XB9R's cheep? Are there problems with 2003 XB9R's that people would want to sell them? |

they don't have all the "refinements" (more like afterthoughts) of the later xb's. but i like mine just fine, unrefined and everything. |

I'd personally get the newest one you can afford, they had a ton of changes over the years. Not that the 03 is bad though. |

If either of them has done the 2004+ belt upgrade thats the one to go with in my opinion -- otherwise the race kit one might be a good pickup though I don't know much about that particular kit. Besides the belt they are great bikes as far as I know -- the '03s were smaller and weaker. Hey, I would pick up a 9R for that price, depending on the condition/looks. When in doubt look at the garage of the person -- if it is neat(ish) then they probably take pretty good care of the bike. Just make sure they broke it in (ask them how they did it, not if they did it). Good luck on the purchase! |

I plan on going to see the bike this weekend. I'm also looking at a 2002 orange & black 883R that has been punched out to a 1200 with Screaming Eagle heads, cams and exhaust. It also has forward controls two up Corbin seat, sissy bar luggage rack and factory tack. It has 3200 miles on it for $5K. All the work was done at my local HD dealer the guy has all the paper work. |

The 883R also has the 1200 rear shocks. |

Yes because those forward controls will help you dive into the turns Good luck with whatever you decide, just don't be suprised if you get the sportster and then a week later end up selling it to get a Buell. You wouldn't be the first |

God man this is the sad thing about having a bike with a HD part anywhere on it. Anyone ever heard of someone putting forward controls on their CBR or GSXR. Huge identity crisis with these things. Too get back on topic I believe they re-sell low due too the love hate thing few love em most hate em. I am selling mine 4800.00 takes it. It's a niche thing they aren't an easy sell. |

I've found quite a few 04 12Rs in that same price range. I dunno why 03 9Rs would be selling for as much or more than 04 12Rs. And right now, it seems like R models are about $1000 less than the same year S model. I haven't figured out any rhyme or reason to used Buell pricing. |

I love my brothers XB12X. That is what I really want but it is out of my price range. I like how versatile the XB12X is; you can ride it down dirt roads and it doubles as a sport touring bike. I currently have a XR650L that I am thinking about tarding. I want a bike that I can do 200 miles in the saddle that has bags. On the other hand I have two young children who take up a lot of my time and I don’t have the time for long rides. I like pulling up to a guy on a rice bike and droning him out with the music of the Buell. Hopefully the guy will call me today so I can go take the XB9R for a spin. |

it has the Bubba Blackwell race kit a who...what? bubba blackwell does motorcycle stunts, no parts manufacturing at all, so i highly doubt the bike has what he is saying. i would think more likely the BUELL race kit. |

Thanks No Rice. The guy did call I am going to hook up with him some time this weekend. The color of the bike is Richard Petty Blue. My wife is going to kill me. Should the XB9R be close to the handling and performance of the XB12R? |

Are there any typical issues with the XB9R's that I should be concerned with? |

Only thing about 03s are the drive belts are different than later models- costs about $600 to switch over to a 04 and later style lifetime warranty belt, and rear wheel bearings had a warranty issue- if the bike has the orange wheel bearings, then they have been switched out. Outside of that, some people say the transmissions in the 03 and 04 bikes aren't as smooth sifting as the 05 and later bikes. |

Having just bought an '03 'S', it is a great bike and I love everything about it, minus my throttle hand going to sleep on longer rides...the tranny is a little notchy, but if you treat it good it will treat you better. Good luck and stick with the Buell. Sportsters are nice, for people who like them. |

So with the race kit, color name, and whatever else, does anyone else think this seller is kinda sketchy? Seems odd to me at least -- am I wrong? |

...there's nothing wrong with the damned belts, just the people that put them on. The only problem I've had with my '03 XB9R that wasn't caused by me was a worn wire to the fan that caused it to run constantly (better than the opposite, I suppose!). Diagnosed, discovered, and fixed in ten minutes with some electrical tape a ziptie. |

I had the 03 9r for a couple years before I sold it for a 04 12r. I put 11k trouble free miles on it. As others have mentioned, the belt drive was upgraded from a 10k mile replacement to a 25k mile replacement between 03 and 04. It was upgraded again to a lifetime belt in 05 I believe. There was an upgrade to the front fork in 05 as well but I don't think that was much of a performance issue. I don't believe there are any "got ya" items to look for, but keep in mind that the 10k mile service will cost you a bit more on the 03 because of the belt replacement. |
