Should there be any play in the primary sprocket that is around the clutch basket? I"m sorry to post here but I need an answer asap, so I can address it with dealer. |

Isn't the sprocket attached to the back (try'n to remember)? If so it should not be loose. |

Point doc, I was referring to the clutch sprocket inside the primary case. I was having a lot of strange noise and while checking the primary chain freeplay, I was able to reach in through the primary chain inspection opening and contact the sprocket that the primary chain is on, around the clutch basket. I could move it laterally, enough so it makes a clacking noise when moved. I was not sure if there was supposed to be any play there or not. I currently have the bike at a dealer for service and they are now trying to tell me that they checked it out, adjusted primary chain and clutch (charging me of course) and nothing is wrong. The interesting thing is that I told them when I brought the bike in, exactly what the issue was and that the primary chain and clutch were in spec. This s my 2nd Buell and I have the manual and know for sure that chain and clutch adjustments were not the cause of the issues I am referring to. I told them to specifically check the clutch sprocket, before I have to arrange for a ride and make the trip out there, only to show them myself that the clutch sprocket is loose. Hopefully they don't jerk me around too bad. |

My bad, I was thinking of the starter gear. I currently have a CNC'd aluminum one and the teeth are machined into the basket. My old one is in the garage and I will check it out and forward my finding, but I suspect you're correct. To make sure I am looking at the right item, I'll take a pic and include it when I get home. Jhanz, There is absolutely no way for the gears to be loose, they are a single unit that makes up the clutch basket. I suggest that you show the mechanic/dealer what you have described and allow them the chance to repair or explain it, or pull the cover yourself and inspect.

Thanks for the insights. Last conversation with the dealer, I explained exactly what the tech needs to check and that he will easily see what I was describing. There is no doubt that the clutch sprocket is moving around, whereas I checked several times. I can only hope that the dealer addresses the issue and it does not become a big ordeal. I just want to ride my bike and I'm tired of dealing with service department issues. |
