well that O2 (2) setting did nothing.. except it seems I lost top end now.. I cranked up low and mid to +6%(and high) it seems to really help. now I just need to figure out where the top went... I had alot more one top with it set to a 1 for some reason. yeah, I know. pissing in the wind

got that map yet??

FWIW...

I've been running the Factory race kit (Race ECM-High Flow Air Filter-Race Can)on my bike ('03 XB9R) since almost new.

Recently I put the D&D can on my bike. It felt like I lost some bottom end and made the bike a lot louder.

My friends who own a shop just bought a Dyno and let me bring my bike in to do a "can-by-can" comparison. Note: This Dyno is new and has been reading low numbers since install. They know this for a fact because they do extensive Dyno testing with Mikuni and have won many Dyno shoot-outs, most recently the LA Calendar show at the Queen Mary, where they took first place. Bob Bennett's bike runs consitently at 107 to 108 HP, but only shows 100 HP on his new Dyno. So they are pretty sure it's off by -7% or so, and the filter housing for the o2 sniffer came cracked, so no Air-Fuel ratio either. Dynojet is taking data to try to figure out why it's reading low, but it really doesn't matter for this test. Soooo...

The first few pulls were with the Race ECM, Race Air Filter and D&D can and the bike fully warmed up. The best run in this configuration was 67.4HP and 59.1 Torque.

I then changed exhaust cans wich took about an hour, and then took the bike for a five mile ride down the freeway and back to let the ecm learn the can and to get the bike back up to temp.

The next few pulls were with the full factory race kit with the best pull being 74.4HP and 61.2 Torque.

I had him do a printout of the best runs in each configuration on the same sheet. Below is a picture I took of the Dyno sheet.

Red = Race ECM, Race Air Filter, D&D Exhaust Can

Purple = Race ECM, Race Air Filter, Race Exhaust Can



Sorry the quality isn't better but it's good enough to see.

These runs were done within an hour and a half of each other on the same dyno, with the same conditions so I feel pretty confident the data is an accurate representation of each cans performance.

Interesting dip in the D&D can there...I'm really hoping to get one of Bubba's new modded stock can's delivered while I'm in Japan to play with...it sounds like it'll kick the race can in the balls!

well, I set it back to a '1' and brought it up 6% all they way across. I'll see how it goes today.

It probably looks a lot like that one also. I could be wrong tho. But generally its the pipe and ecm together that create the curve.
You might want to get a hold of dave later today. And ask about a new pipe he maybe getting to test on a 12.

Damn... that D&D chart looks like sh&!

So what are you going to do Tim?

I wonder how the D&D would fare with the stock ECM? Seems I read somewhere the D&D is set up to use the stock unit, but don't quote me on that.

I've been waiting on the D&D to show up at my door. I've already paid for one. But that big ol' hole in the curve at 2500 - 3500 costs a chunk of change!

I could be wrong on this, but with a fairly major change such as an exhaust, don't you have to reset the MAP/TPS stuff before you head down the road to let the system relearn the settings? Without the reset isn't it sort of like picking up a chunk of leaf spring in the exhaust and punching a big hole in it and then expecting the system to "relearn" to compensate for the newly added hole?

I ask with this example because I did once punch a hole into a muffler on a bike and I was just thankfull that it didn't penetrate the engine case nor my foot. I'll add that car drivers generally give you plenty of room when something hanging out of the bottom of a bike started making sparks like a 4th of July show.

Anyway, I think a system reset is in order after an exhaust change beyond simply riding it down the roadway. Just a thought from someone who still prefers carbs partly for this very reason with the f.i. computer chip resetting. If they won't give you the tools to reset stuff at home then they are trying to force you into the dealerships for service, and that isn't something that sets well with us home mechanic types. Anyway, I digress, so on with the show.

You do not need to reset the ECM for an exhaust change. The ECM does that for you. The only time you need to reset the ECM/TPS is when you install a new ECM such as a race ECM.

So is the massive crater from the D&D or from a lack of interface to cover for it or from something else or is the D&D just a poor choice for this application in that specific RPM range?

I agree with Noface, I think you are supposed to run the D&D with the stock ECM, that is what it is tuned for. Timbo, if you get the time, do that comparison for us.

Hey guys,
I'm not keeping the D&D pipe. I have someone who wants to buy it so I don't plan to put it back on. Not sure what it would do with the stock ECM, maybe somebody else has or will do that. I wouldn't think it would do better, after all the race ECM is designed for a more free flowing exhaust and the D&D is even more free flowing than the race can, but hey who knows.

The bike needs to be ridden to "re-learn" the best map for the pipe(even if the D&D was on a week ago). I don't think the D&D got a fair shake, but I do believe that dip is there.

I'm bad, I guess the bike was ridden with the D&D can on to get to the dyno, then ridden 5 miles to relearn the race can. Should have learned to re-read before I speak. I'd still be interested in another bike giving the D&D a shot. I do want a "DRUMMER", D&D is to loud for me...

Noface,

I have the D&D muffler on my bike with the Buell Race ECM and I modified the air box (see From Cruiser to Sport Bike - An XB9S Rider's Log by Keith Thrash...).

My dyno testing does show a curve similar to yours, but how often are you trying to accelerate from below 3500 rpms? I can tell you the bike makes great power in the range where you normally ride on the street. It's a real hoot to ride even compared to my race prepped F3.

bike still in shop for fork seal...
maybe next week I'll get another dyno run with the 'fast by feracci' map

notes..
I only rode it to the dealer about 5 miles away and it was all in town riding so I couldn't redline in every gear.. or any gear, but I could notice it running alot better even just a normal go from a stop light is better.. I'll get to test it more next week.

much closer when I raced my freinds s1 that I had raced several times before.. in the next week or 2 I'll have a new dyno run to see what it did..
