Been researching Buells for a couple of months and have missed 3 bikes by a day or so. So I find this bike on eBay, the seller is a few hours away from me...but dunno if it is worth buying and fixing. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Motorcycles___2005- Buell-XB9SX-Lightning_W0QQitemZ230258138835QQddnZM otorcyclesQQddiZ2283QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item230258 138835& As you can see, it basically needs all of the controls, lighting, instrument cluster, and a pipe. I made the guy a cash offer the first time the bike was listed, and he may go for it if it doesn't sell the 2nd time around. I'm not too worried about the bars, mirrors, signals, and pipe since I was planning on changing that stuff out when I got a XB9 anyways. There are 2 flags- not having a key to hear it run, and the ripped metal that looks like it was the instrument cluster mount. Something like this worth buying and fixing, or could it be trouble in the long run? |

Easy fix. Just make sure the frame or neck isn't tweaked. If it is the bike will never be right. |

I wouldn't buy anything that I couldn't hear run. I bought a vehicle off ebay once. Never again. |

They go for 35-4500 on craigslist all day. Don't waste your time on a "fixer upper" these bikes got enough issues from the factory without adding a wreck to them. |

Mr2Shim, I am high bidder on that bike now. Let's see how high it goes before it's all over with. Buelltroll, finding Buells down here in NC at those prices are next to impossible. I have been checking Craigslist for NC, SC, and eastern TN for a couple of weeks and haven't turned up any deals like that. But I'll keep plugging away. There is one up in WI on the Cycle Trader, I offered them $5500 shipped and they wouldn't take it. They have the bike listed for $5500 plus $469 to ship. I had my CC ready, and they wouldn't budge a penny though I told them it was a done deal. Oh well...more will pop up. |

Mr2Shim, I can find Rs and Blasts pretty easy...but it is really hard to find a S. I've called dealers with new 03 and 04 models who told me not a penny less than $8900, and that's what a new 08 costs...if not more. It seems like the average price for an 03-05 is in the $5-5500 range and 06s are another $1000. I missed an 05 XB9SX for $4000 by a day. Called the dealer in the morning, tried calling back in the afternoon, but couldn't get anyone to answer the phone (bike week at Myrtle Beach), and salesman calls me back the next day saying it got sold friday afternoon. Teddagreek, I figured that is what he is trying to do. I was suprised to see the bike listed with a clear title. I would have thought from what I've been told about Buells, that it would have been totaled out after taking that kind of damagge. And I didn't offer him anywhere close to 3k for the bike...figuring that is what he is trying to do. |

Winslow - good luck on finding a Buell. When you get a chance, pop over to Storm Fronts, Carolina Corner Carvers, and introduce yourself. We have Buellers from the east coast to the mountains and everywhere in between. |

Will do. I'm in Kings Mountain and work up in Hickory...not too far from the mountains for some fun riding. |

walk away, that price will buy you a perfect running bike. I think bueller is right, he's waitin' for a sucker. the black one with the race kit looks pretty good. Careful with that much money on ebay. |

Thanks guys...I'll keep on looking. Maybe start looking at Rs too, they have really grown on me. Just worried about being leaned over too much since I have carpal tunnel. |

I'd focus on the xb9sx in High Point. Looks cherry, plus it has the race kit installed. Might be worth peace of mind to mosey on over to High Point to ride or at least listen & watch the owner ride it. Ask lot's of questions, if he's a good chap he'll be happy to answer them. I won my '04 12s on Ebay for under $4k and have loved it - Good luck! |

the R's aren't that bad once you get used to them. it just forces you to keep your arms relaxed is all. Whichever one you get though, I know you'll enjoy it. |

winslow, your wrists are a legit concern, but you will accommodate to it. keep you arms relaxed. I went to buy a xb12s, dead set on it. test rode it fir quite a while and came back on the fence. I was ready to go to ducati and get a monster and the salesman said "try the R". I wouldn't give the keys back. for me, the xb12r felt much more stable at speed. the s was a kick in town though. try and get a ride on both. |

I will have to find a R local to try out...the local Buell dealership hasn't had any instock and isn't planning on getting any. I did find a really nice 04 12R on the Cycle Trader for a good price, and the guy said they could work on pricing some or help out with shipping. Nice red 12R with the race kit installed. The S just reminded me more of how I liked to sit on a dirt bike, and that's why I fell in love with the S...and some reason I think they are a little better looking. But the R has really grown on me in terms of looks. S is that "trademark" Buell look though. |
