It really does sound electrical -- could it be a corrupted ECM -- never heard of it happening but my work in the computer industry has demonstrated to me that if it is a computer it can get corrupted, and maybe this is just a bad/corrupted flash at the factory or dealership. Otherwise, sounds like loose connections or a rubbed/chafed wire(s), something that does happen on Buells due to the harness routing/design. Do you get blown fuses?

I second checking out transport to another dealership -- offer them the chance to earn your business by picking up and returning your bike (at no cost) and fixing the problem. Call and find out if they have a Buell guy in their service department and then tell him your problems, get them thinking about it, most likely he will want to get you running again (techs really do want to help, sometimes they just don't know how) and he will most likely be willing to work on your behalf with the dealership to get your bike in and looked at.

Also, call Buell customer support and talk to them about your problems and your current issues with getting help from your current dealership -- give them the chance to try and work something out.

It sucks to have a machine not function right -- I know it can be fixed though, we just need to get you to the person who wants to fix it and has the knowledge. Good luck man!

Too bad you're so far away. If you were within 500 miles of me, I'd come take care of it for you. There HAS to be a decent dealer around there somewhere.....

Herobluebuell,

I’ve had similar symptoms after I did my own 10,000 mile check, with the exception of fouling plugs. My bike would run perfectly for 15 minutes and then “POP” and the engine shut-down. I’d get it started and the rpm’s would search 500-1200 rpm, POP, and then shut down. After a couple of hours it would start and idle perfectly. This time I noticed that around 350 degrees engine temp it would POP and shutdown. (I have the VDST software). What to do?

I made sure the plug wires are good. (I have seen wires pass the ohm check when cool but once they heat up they fail.)

Checked for intake manifold leaks, none.

Now I started swapping “electrical” stuff. First, I removed my race ECM and installed the stock ECM to no avail. Second, the O2 sensor – no help. I thought about the static timing and put it back to the original position, (I marked it before adjusting) – same thing. During this whole event, I never got one fault code. After a lengthy consultation with Al at American Sportbike, the engine temp sensor was suspect. It has been the culprit of several freaky things in the past and it is fairly easy to change out. During all of the maintenance I performed, I don’t ever remember disturbing the sensor. So I changed the engine temp sensor out and the bike has been running flawlessly since.

I’m not saying it will fix your problem, just that sometimes we need to think out of the box. Don’t give up; believe me I know how frustrating it can be.

I had an '05 City-X that I bought new. I rode it about 7000 miles with no issues at all. Then I installed the race kit. The K&N, pipe, race ecm. I rode it into the dealer and had the TPS reset for the changes.

It changed the bike. Before I could start it up, leave it idle and go ride. With the changes it would easily foul the plugs on cold starts, then do exactly what you are describing. Fouled plugs never come back from being wet to run correctly. It got to where I would start the bike and immediately ride(easy of course, until it warmed up). Anything else would foul the plugs. But otherwise it ran great.

The idle would "hang" and go irratic, I found that was from being set too high. It wouldn't handle 1050 it had to idle about 1000 to 1025.

Does your bike have the race kit, or is it stock?

dude, it totally sounds like a chaffed wire under the seat. same thing hapened to me and i thought it was over heated but it was a wire to the ecm grounding out on the battery.

My bike did the exact same thing as yours, at about 2500 miles ('06 Ss). It would stutter, would not idle, and if I was riding along, it would backfire big time and stall. I was always able to get it started again and get home, but it was a PITA nonetheless.
I brought it in to the shop to have the race ECM installed and TPS reset. The bike has run flawlessly since. I even had the guys scan the stock ECM and it threw no codes. That is the part that makes me scratch my head.
So, I had to spend 300 dollars to fix a new bike that was still under warranty....

Good luck.

Dropped it off at the dealership. I asked to talk to the Buell Tech like everyone said to do. Apparently They just told him it was running like crap and he had nothing to go on. He wasn't happy about that either. So, After talking to him for 20 mins or so I am pretty confident that he can fix it. Thank you everyone for your help and support.

Dealer finally got back to me. Apparently the Crank Position sensor was loose which caused it to only get contact part of the time which made it run like crap. Thanks again for everyones help I appreciate the support.

Sorry to hear of your troubles..BUT...

If it were my bike I'd start with a new set of plugs, check the battery terminals and and do the TPS reset. Then with the bike idling start moving wires around, especially close to the headstock and backbone. I'll bet one of those is the problem.

Bumblebee: There are new plugs in it, battery terminals are tight and the dealer did a TPS reset all ready. The dealer actually still has my bike. They have had is since last tuesday. They think they found the problem but they are still checking things over to make sure.

Update...got the bike back from the dealership 85 miles later still doing the same thing. Got it home found out like everyone said check wires under the seat come to find out what was happening when you put the seat it it would push forward on the ecm wires and then when you sat on it. the plugs in the ecm would come partially unplugged. we rerouted the ecm wires to go under the battery wire and took it for a ride. 40+ miles later hasn't done it yet. So a certified buell tech couldn't figure it out it took me my father and brother to figure this out but it seams to be fixed now.
