Ive put about 3500 miles on my 97 S1 and now and am beginning to think I need something else. Anything longer than 15 to 20 minutes kills my ass. I had the seat re-done with thicker padding and the guy did an excellent job but its still a narrow seat. Has anyone made the transition from S1 to XB and how much more comfortable is the XB? I dont have the money for a another but was thinking I could trade my S1 for an XB9. Ive sat on one once and the seat seems much better. I love my bike but U just cant enjoy riding it that much. |

Switch out to the later model tuber tank & seat from an M2. It'll give you the ride you're looking for and a whole lot cheaper. |

S is more comfortable than R by a bit IMHO, but it really depends on your height, arm reach, leg length, etc. Sounds like Hero is in your future! |

"how much more comfortable is the XB?" Worlds. But HTFU! Squats and getting in shape and sqirming work wonders. |

Just keep the S1, you'll regret getting rid of it, and buy yourself an XB9SX. that's the closest thing to an S1 in my mind, and the seat is wonderful on long rides. I loved mine, until the XB12XT came out... |

Keep the S1. She's the skanky trollup you knew in high school that you don't tell anyone you still see sometimes. Marry the XB. Continue to have "affairs" with your S1. Tubers are like KLRs. Once you one one, you don't sell it or you'll regret it. |

Not enough Guinness in the world to drown that broke heart. The better option might be to add a S2/S3 or a ULY. Joe (Message edited by bad_karma on May 29, 2008) |

If you do go the XB route, there are a number of different seat options from which one can chose. The stock seat on the 'Bolts are very thin and quite uncomfortable, however the Buell Custom seat is much better. It is about an inch or so thicker, so the seat height can be a problem for shorter riders.
Buell lists eleven different seats for the Lightning variants and there is a low seat for the Uly. Add the Corbin and other after market makers, and you have quite a few ways to get comfortable, no matter which XB you chose. I have the Custom seat on my XB12SR, and before that I had the Streetfighter seat on my XB9S.
Both were a big improvement over the stock seat. |

"It's (S1) made to only have one cheek on it at a time" E. Buell You never forget your tuber. I still miss my M2. I gave her up for the sophistication and refinement of an XB. I only wish I had a S1. IMHO S1's are bad to the bone. My lustful eyes always wonder to:

I sold my 97 S1 and bought a XB12R. World of difference on all counts. The most I was able to ride the S1 for in one day was 450 miles. I was hurting bad and that was when I was younger and slimmer. It is not made for distance riding. It is made to scare small children, animals and bikers. It will shake your eyeballs out if you are not careful. The XB12R is not a distance bike, I did a little shy of 600 miles in one day and could not wait to get off her and self medicate. However, I am a lot heavier and out of shape these days. I missed the S1 so bad I got another one, nothing like holding on for dear life while the beast tries to shake you off. Keep it and get another Buell. For distance the Uly, M2, S2 and S3s are good choices. |

I own an R and had an S previously. I really don't think the R is any less comfortable once you replace the stock seat which is as hard as a rock. |

Like the other ones said keep the S1. I never tried one but I think it's one of the best looking Buell ever. If I had the money there would be a S1 and a XB12S in my garage. |

My bad...didn't read carefully enough and thought you had an older M2. My new advice: Sell the S1 for a late M2. Improved heads, improved ergos, still the same unique hooligan tuber style and look. |

+1 on adding to the stable. Am keeping the X-1, and added an '08TT. To me the tuber is like the GTO or Hemi 'Cuda much lusted after in years gone by. The '08 is better, more efficient, yada yada. The tuber is just COOL! |

Ive read the M2 is better for comfort but it just doesnt do it for me in the looks department. I originally wanted an XB but for the price I was drawn to a used S1. For me looks are a tie between the XB and S1. I guess the S1 appealed a little more to me because it seemed like it would be easier to work on myself with its frame and non fuel injected. |

If you can afford it, keep it. It's like owning a classic muscle car. If you can't keep it, you will have no problem transitioning to an XB. FTD wrote; "Keep the S1. Do a lot of miles on bicycles and that S1 seat will feel luxurious. |

just something raw and mean about that bike, if you sell it, it will be the one you tell your great grand kids about, kind of like the last time high gas prices caused everyone to DUMP muscle cars for cheap. (my parents traded a 70 Plymouth Road runner with a 440 for a subaru~ I have never felt so violated in my life. I was 5) Never trade in, just add too if you can. |

That's why when people ask me "why do you still have that Satellite, you never drive it and you'll never finish it" (right, and wrong), I tell them about my mom and the 70 Charger 500, 440/6 with 4speed that she GAVE AWAY back in '73. Grrrr. I may not drive some of my toys, but I'll be damned if I'm ever letting them get away, lol. Fortunately my wife understands: no tags, no registration, no insurance = no dollars to let sit and wait |

I agree haven't looked back since getting my xb9s but I have looked over at the S1 and thought that I'd like to take one for a day. Also - has this board converted to a Mopar board? I've been a mopar fan since I was 16 (1980) my current mopar is a 68 GTS convertible (340 auto) converting to 5.7 or 6.1 L 4 speed. The buell gets 50 mpg and the GTS gets 10 mgh it averages out at a Prius. You know Prius, those ugly things nearly standing still on the road that act as slolum cones. |
