In an effort to play with tuning my bike I was informed I needed to give it hell then pull over and read the afv.

So I did give it hell and it was fun.

However, since then I've had a tapping noise in the engine. I don't recall it ever doing it before that night. It only does this after the engine warms up. The bike still runs fine, but this new somewhat loud tapping/ticking sound worries me.

What could I have done? My first guess would be something to do with the rods or valves.

Any ideas on how I can go about diagnosing the problem. If I can't figure it out I suppose I can take it in for $ervice.

When it STOPS making weird ticking and rattling noises
THEN worry.
Till then just ride it till it breaks.

Put a Spec Ops, Drummer or D&D muffler on it... You'll never hear another weird engine noise again!!! lol

In all likelyhood, you're just hearing normal valvetrain noise...these engines make an enormous racket.

...but if you're worried and your bike is under warranty, I would take it in and have a tech listen/look at it.

I agree with not worrying about the weird noises coming from the bike.... mine makes all kinds of strange sounds, so I believe. You are just now noticing a usual sound because you believe in your head that you gave it hell and messed up something, chances are that the sound was there before.

most likely its just normal noises. mine is always making new noises, and i probably know exactly what your noise sounds like.

sometimes it makes cold noises, then they go away...... it'll make a noise when it warms up, then one day it doesn't make that noise anymore. i've given up worrying, it's just a noisy ass engine.

ps, giving it more hell is the best thing to do. for an engine out of a cruiser, they sure love to be thrashed. i swear mine runs better after caning it at the track.

i sold one of my 9's to a very good friend a couple years ago. he doesnt put to many miles on and rides nothing like me so its kind of been getting babied for the most part.

for the last while he has been telling me it sounds funny(has a louder tick than usual). i have been dismissing it and just said its a normal buell.

well the other night i helped him service it. changed the plugs, wires, filter, oil. all the fun stuff. it could have definatly been done sooner...

anyway, i fired it up to make sure everything was as it should be and it sure does sound a bit different(believe me by now i know the normal buell sounds like its coming unglued sounds, lol). i let it get good and warmed up since we had just changed the oil and all. didnt get any better.

sounded like a sticking lifter. plus he said it doesnt always do it, just sometimes(which explains why i hadnt heard it any other time he mentioned it).

since i know he rides it compared to my style(he hardly leaves town on it usually) i thought a good old flogging was in order.

took it out and ran her all the way to redline through all the gears a couple times. then of course did a few wheelies and such on it and brought it back. it wasnt making that odd noise when it left so guess we will see what happens...

i told him it was just bored and wanted some real attention, lol

Thank for the replies. I hope it is nothing. I have the race exhaust, but it must not be loud enough.

...is your airbox opened up? That allows a lot more of the valvetrain noise to be heard.

My 2006 XB12Ss that I bought used this spring was making a clattering racket that could be heard over the race exhaust. Being new to Buells I wasn't sure if it was normal Buell noise or not. After some searching on this site I saw mention of updated compensator nut specs. That started bugging me a bit.

It kept bugging me, and finally I took it to the dealer and the compensator nut was in fact loose. Fortunately, by catching it in time no significant damage was done. Now the bike sounds great!

If you are constantly worrying about it, I say get it checked out. I'm glad I did. I'm having a lot more fun on the bike now.
