I've had the xb12s a lil over a month now and I _Still_ hit neutral during everyday driving when trying to go from 1st to 2nd. I make a conscious effort most of the time. Seems like it happens about every 1 out of 10 times which is a lot. I adjusted the shifter down a bit to make it easier to move the lever upwards. Last night I checked the clutch adjustment and it was set correct. I checked it down on the case... Being this bike is kind of loud I think everyone knows when I misshift. |

Maybe you're not kicking high enough? It happens to me every once and a while. |

I have done this on my XB9SX before too. In my case its just not lifting high enough. I get so use to the 2,3,4,5 shifts that when I'm back down in 1st I sometimes forget I need to pull a little farther than the other shifts. If it is only 1 out of 10 times it occures, I doubt it is any kind of adjustment problem, more likely as I stated above. |

I have been doing this lately too, ever since my 1000 mi check up. I switched to harley synthetic, could this have anything to do with it? |

Its worse on mine till the fluid warms up, then its ok. I reversed my shift pattern. IF you can get used to it, it works a LOT better. |

You might need to adjust the pedal lower. I used to do the same until I adjusted the lever. |

what do you mean? I've only had the bike a month so I'm still learning what to do. There are three adjustments that affect the transmission. One is the clutch cable adjustment, done by using the turnbuckle in the cable. Another is the ball ramp mechanism behind the clutch inspection cover. The third is the primary chain tension, which is adjusted by turning the big bolt that is located under the front of the primary cover on the transmission. The service manual has directions for adjusting all three. You can probably also find them posted around here somewhere. But the service manual is worth the $70. It will save you that much money if you only use it once. |

the 1,2 shift is a big jump compared to the rest. I get "false 2nd gear" indications all the time... I shift to 2nd, neutral light goes out, release the clutch... nothin. I'll look down and the 'N' light will be off so I try again and it suddenly lights up. Mash the shifter again and then it works. All happens in about 4 seconds... Pretty much gotten used to it. I have changed (and gotten used to) the GP shift setup. My primary IS in spec. |

These are Harley products made for huge hairy men with big feet and big boots. I have the same issue if I shift like a Sally. I know what's gonna happen the very second I shift...... the green "N" of shifting death. SHIFT IT HARD. |

I also had this problem; I really had to make a conscience effort to make the shift. No more problems after reversing the pattern. I just rotated the lever that’s on the shifter shaft 180deg. |

I run GP (reverse shift pattern) on my 12R and I don't have any issues with going between 1st to 2nd -- it's just a stamp down. Going up from 2nd to 1st is no problem either -- in fact I have had a much easier time of popping into neutral since I did the switch. Before I changed I would get a couple neutrals per ride, especially when it was cold. my .02 cents |

I miss second a lot too, but not all the time, so I figure it's probably me. I usually do it worst when I'm trying to get that lofty feeling. Of course sometimes I hit it too good and see way too much sky, panic, and do the clinch and slam. I just tell everybody I always double shift going to second. If I don't have time to stop and explain, I just miss third too so they'll understand. Rotzaruck!! |

Wow! I'm surprise to hear all this - I need to dig into the manual, because I can almost NeVeR find Neutral on my CityX when I want it. Takes some deliberate "tapping" up and down a couple of times at lights. Argh! |

LOL........often when I'm starting off the line I toss it into neutral due to "sally" shifting. Of course when I WANT neutral I'm digging up and down to get it! I've found if I shift like I mean it, I never have a problem. |

It is a longer throw so I need to make sure I do a longer stroke from 1st to 2nd. To get to neutral, while in 1st gear & clutch lever depressed, throttle up and try to get to neutral. It is a lot easier to shift to neutral this way. My $0.02 |

If you determine it's not mechanical... just try "preloading" your shift by simply putting a little upward foot pressure on the shift lever *before* you pull in the clutch... makes for a much cleaner shift. |

That's the way I've always shifted and seems to be what the problem is. I am used to shifting really quick, but with the buell I I have to exaggerate the shift slowly to avoid getting suck in neutral. It is worse when I get on it at high revs. -Pull in the clutch all the way to the bar. -Swift upward kick in the shift lever. -Let the clutch out.. My wifes 06 model is MUCH easier to shift than my 04 because it has the updated transmission. } |
