I completely agree and using factory recommended fluids is a 100% safe thing to do. At the first oil change I went with Mobil1 gear oil. 20,000 miles later the stator looked like this Replaced stator, 20,000 miles later I had another stator burn out. Then I changed to Formula+, it's been well over 20,000 miles since, with no problems yet. Coincidence? Maybe, but I'll just stick with Formula+ |

Ditto what Glitch said, and my stator looked just like that. Changed to Mobil 1 75W90 Synth at 1K miles...at ~18K or so my stator was toast. Switched to Mobil 1 20W50 after that. Same price, no difference in shifting, peace of mind = priceless. |

I had heard good things about Amsoil on previous threads so, I changed to the 20w-50 aircooled stuff the other day. Wow! It actually did make a difference in the way it shifted. Not as clunky and smoother shifts. And I'm usually a skeptic with the "vast improvement" comments. |

I have been using GL-5 since 200 miles on the bike and now have 21,000 on the bike with no problems (yet). We will see. Bike shifts fantastic with it. When I change the oil (at every 1,500 miles), the oil is almost like new with no smell at all. Did the bikes with the bad stators have a smell to the oil? (I had heard this awhile back on this site). |

I've seen stators burn like that with all types, OE, Syn3, Amsoil, etc, but that does not mean there's not some validity to that. When a stator goes, you know it as soon as you pull the inspection cover, regardless of the oil type...It's a smell that stays in your clothes all day, and in your skin for a couple of days if you do the work. I do agree, too, that oil is among the many things (Well, all things, really) chosen on price point for any given product. I just think that a manufacturer is going to choose oil, and especially filters, that are better, to avoid warranty claims. Warranty ultimately comes out of their pocket, and I'm sure that, somewhere at HD-Buell, there's a guy that looks warranty claims, and oil cost, and crunches numbers all day. |
