What "impressed" you the most with the gear reduction? |

I would be interested to know what change it made also. Not sure I would be interested if it reduced top end as I feel like I could use a sixth gear already. |

Yes, I did it primarily to have "engine braking". XB12S have ZERO engine braking when you get off the throttle. Sometimes I (we all do this) go into a turn a little hot and when I transition from acceleration to braking I want my motor to start the process of deceleration. With the XB9 crank gear I was able to achieve this plus accelerate out of the turn a little stronger! |

What’s wrong with revisiting previous posts? I don't see any harm in sharing; what I see is an issue is individuals getting on their soap box and making comments that benefit only the commentator. Your post has no value to anyone but you. I thought this web was about sharing ideas. Maybe you can demonstrate the use of the "X" button. |

After review... my bad. Blake I apologize for this misunderstanding. I just didn’t acknowledge Livnlo’s second input as one, even though it states it’s one. I just read thru it as a continuation of his thought on the subject!! Thanks Retrittion |

I would be interested to know what change it made also. Not sure I would be interested if it reduced top end as I feel like I could use a sixth gear already. It essentially converts 5th gear into 4th. Before you decide this is a bad thing, check your gas mileage running around on the highway in 4th gear. Mine went UP. |

I swapped mine this past weekend. Low speed is MUCH better. I can idle the Uly at 8mph now. It's still jerky that slow if you give it any throttle, but running 15 is quite easy. I haven't been using 5th gear for the last year, since I did the gas mileage experiment mentioned in my prior post. Now I use 5th, so not much has changed for me on the top end. |

I bought a cam cover from an 03'xb9 to put on my 04'xb12. My original plan was just to replace my damaged cam cover and install an HP oil pump drive gear (since I have it off). Now you have me thinking about swapping out the cams for low end performance. A set of xb9 cams are coming with my cover that I could use. How much difference is there in the top end with 9's on a 12? I ride with alot of inlines and wouldnt want to sacrifice much top end. |

Sfinton, This just my opinion so please consider this as you read. First, you have a very nice bike. Yes, because it's a Buell and secondly the pic of your bike shows a clean ride, NICE! And I just want to address the top end speed comment from my perspective. I have tailored my bike to the kind of riding experience I want. That’s why I started with a Buell, V-Twin=Acceleration. Very few things thrill’s me as much as acceleration and nothing will frustrate your inline friends as like acceleration. I am sharing this with you because I personally have let go of the idea of speed for acceleration. I’ll get to 100mph and then what? I just make sure I’m the first one their! One of the biggest contributors to the acceleration of my bike is when I reduced rotating mass. I lightened my primary drive; this allowed my stock motor to accelerate quicker than before and start pulling away from other Bueller’s and inliner’s. There was no remapping of the ECM for this mod. I don’t know about the cams 9vs12, but I believe if you start changing cams from the original intent of the designer you may have to consider remapping your ECM (or at least purchase a race ECM). I have made several mods to my bike and one of the constraints I had was to “minimize” the impact to the air/fuel mixture. If you get a chance to ride with a XB9 do so, because these bikes are quick! And it’s not because of their cam, it’s because there motor will spin up quicker than a 12. One reason is that they have a shorter stroked motor. Again, you have a nice bike and the intent of your bike is different than any other, so have fun with acceleration. (Message edited by point_doc on May 15, 2008) |

Part numbers? I don't know the numbers. You need the primary sprocket and chain from a CityX. Be sure to get the same year as your bike, as the 08's are different than prior years. |

Does the bike wheelie easier and or accelerate faster? I'm liking what I'm reading about the swap. Thinking about it myself |

Wheelies I would assume it would be easier but I havn't done the swap to my bike. Did my Dyna and it made it easier to wheelie so I would assume yes. The Primary gear will make your acceleration better but you wont have the top speed you did prior to the change. |

I just want to out run inline 4's light to light just to make them mad. I can deal with 5 to 10% loss in top end if my math is correct. I don't even know what the 08's top out at! |

Does the bike wheelie easier and or accelerate faster? Yes. At least up to 40 mph, which is about where 1st gear redlines after the swap. After that I'm not sure, because you're not in the same gear after the swap as you would be before the swap. I think overall acceleration is faster. |

It seems that top speed is important. I have this mod and will share my thoughts on top speed. If you replace the XB12 stock steel 38 teeth with a XB9 stock steel 34 teeth gear; I have experienced that you now have engine braking which there never was before. The bike will pull noticeably harder out of the turns and off of the line (please note I weigh in at 225), but it's not like the bike has suddenly come alive! This is why I went with changing out my primary and final drive to aluminum, and NOW the bike is alive!!! I have had my Buell to 125 (my judgment call), you charge harder into the top speed because you are deeper (by approx. 400rpm's) into the power band of the bike in Fifth gear. If you are doing freeway speeds of 100 plus and accelerate, the bike will literally step out and pull's like a MULE! There is no waiting for the motor to catch up with your intent, it’s done. Its thinktwistgone or gonetwistthink it’s so responsive I can’t distinguish between the two. Every bike that I have ever owned, the first project was to change the gearing before any motor work. I wanted to know what the motor was capable of before I spent any money or time on it and gear changing will provide the cheapest thrill. I had a new Kawi in my youth, was disappointed with the performance especially “top speed". Changed my rear sprocket by adding three teeth (adding teeth to the rear is accomplishing the same as removing teeth from the front) and now the bike was able to perform better in the top end because the motor was able to be deeper into the power band of the motor and closer to the red line at a greater speed. Now it may be true that our Buell’s will lose top end speed, I don’t know because I haven’t pushed the bike past 125. But I am certain I get there in less time. There has been mention in this post about gas mileage, can any one that has had the conversion done tell me what they are getting now, compared to what they were getting. |
