i have been sanding my plastics looking for a flat black scheme and its working out nicely. I have no intention of painting or coating. Any reason to worry about UV light or anything else? |

The plastics are the same all the way through, so I woudln't be concerned with it. Please post pics of your progress, I'd very interested to see. |

what grades of sand paper and what technique are you using? I am getting a bit tired of polishing my black plastics. What color do you have? Thanks |

black plastic- hence the plan for flat black color scheme. no plan right now, started with scotch bright and decided to go deeper so now I really digging out the shine with 200 grit and will move up in fineness (is that a word?) to smooth it out. I plan to only do the front fairing (its gauged/scratched from hitting a barb wire fence awhile ago) the seat cowl and rear signals |

YIKES use the 600 wet sand paper. You don't need to take that heavy of a grit to get a dull flat look. That 200 will leave rough scratches and take up more time and energy than needed. |

yep 200 really digs into it.... thats okay though as I have some deep scratches that I still actually wont be able to get out. |

Yeah... Don't use 200 . Use 6-800 and wet sand it. have a constant trickle of water going over the body work. Don't use a lot of pressure and use about 3-4" circles. You can mask areas to get a harder line. I've had mine with a flat/shiny black scheme for about four years now. No UV issues but your gear will polish the body work in time so it's an ongoing project. Expect to re-sand once a year. |

After you scuff it up go to a auto paint supply store and buy an adheasion(sp?) promoter like Bulldog or U Pol plastic primer.... its a product we use to make paint stick to abs and injected molded plastics... spray it and let it dry then shoot it flat black and you'll have no worries.... Thats how we do it here anyways. |

since this thread didnt die Ill tell ya what I ended up with. yes, i hate the aesthetics of things and a clean bike mine is not. it's a commuter. The mechanical aspect of things- oil, filters, tire PSI, spark plugs steering bearings, etc all perfect at all times... I did the final sanding at 600 grit on the fairing, front fender and seat cowl. got out many small scratches from the crash but left the big ones.... then I got bored, aaannnnd I am done. now I am going riding btw now bugs make a weird oily spot

}Gotcha.... didn't realize the look he was after. To just dull the gloss I woulda probablly used 1500 or 2500 grit...but if you want the deep scratches the 600 or 800 works well...really fine (0000) steal wool would work great to I'm sure. Would love to see the finished product} |

i have been sanding my plastics looking for a flat black scheme and its working out nicely I tried the same thing a couple of years ago. When I sanded the gloss off the black plastics, I could see 'waves' in the airbox cover, similar to rings on a cut tree trunk. Didn't like it, so I painted them flat black. |

That's why you use the 6-800 grit. You won't get the rings and if you do it with a constant stream of water and very little pressure it turns out well . 1500-2500 will make it look somewhat polished. Still shiny anyway. |

I would strongly recommend going to an auto paint shop that sells good quality catalyzed acrylic clear coating. Buy a flatting compound (or flattening - I never remember) and you'll get a flat clear coat. It's more washable and durable than a sanded finish. Won't get greasy fingerprints that have to be removed with soap and sandpaper. Bug guts won't stick as bad as a sanded surface. Remember, you sand a surface in order to enable adhesion of other stuff to it - like primers, paints, adhesives... and it works just the same for greases, oil, guts, lipstick... (oops, too much information) |

The sanded look is different from a matte or satin finish... It looks better IMO. |

It's more of a velvet look... It doesn't look like paint . I've never had any trouble with bugs being too ground in... I wash it with dish washing soap though . |

only the front fairing, fender and seat cowl so far... just too impatient and i like the unfinished look. Apparently other people do too 'cause i got lots of double takes today. "what the f#@k was that?".... or maybe people are always lookin and i didnt notice!

That is SICK!!! I want to do that with my 12s, but I think I will change it to the Kick Ash plastics first. Right now it is the translucent orange. |

I can't argue with the duller finishes in general. EVERY gun I've ever owned with a wood stock I had Parkerized and the wood was sanded and oiled. Ruger 77 (30.06) and 77V (7.62 NATO) both done that way. Remington 870 was bought with that finish - Personal preference. (Message edited by slaughter on May 21, 2008) |
