im hoping im just paranoid but i have removed the pinch bolts from both sides and after following the manual, i cannot get the rear axle free from the bearings. it seems that the more i turn, the tighter the rim ends up into the side of the swingarm

Sounds like the bearings' inner races are frozen to the axle.

This has happened to other people, I can't remember the fix. Do a search with the google feature at the top of the page.

Use anti-seize on the threads and flat surfaces when you put it back together.

Good luck.

penetrating lube from napa works as well as a deadblow hammer on the axle itself.

Those salty michigan roads will screw up anything metal.

I would soak everything back there with PB Blaster overnight, use a broom stick and a dead blow hammer and see if she comes.

If not a sawzall will fit between the swingarm and the bearings. Cut both sides and get a new axle and bearings.

I know cuz that is how I had to remove my axle and swing arm pivot bolt after my last crash.

It will help if you clamp the swingarm side together to keep them from spreading when you start to back out the axle. A tie down strap would work.

I had this happen the first time I took off the rear wheel...I used cable lube on the axle, tapped the axle a few times, let it sit for about an hour, tapped it again, and then ran a ratcheting tie down through the wheel around the swingarm to squeeze it. As I loosened the axle, I tapped it a few times and it broke loose.

After that I have run anti-seize on the threads and grease on the rest of the axle and have not had a problem since...
