Hi All, First of all I’ve been checking this forum out for the last few weeks and it has been really great. Well, my problem is that for the last three years I’ve been riding my Dad’s Honda cbr 600rr and it’s been really fun but I’m ready to buy my own bike. I have decided that I want to get a buell just not sure what models I should consider, I like the sports bike set up on the R’s(clip-ons, rearsets) but not sure which engine to go with. I can get a brand new 2008 xb12r for $9,494 or a used 2007 xb9r for $6,800 with 380 miles. I am a college student and the xb9r fits into my budget better but will I be happy or will I want more. I am also looking to upgrade the bike later on. So which one do you think make more sense for me the 9 or the 12. Thanks for reading D |

One thing for someone under the age of 25-27 is the cost of insurance. The two bikes can be as much as twice the cost for insurance the way some companies break the costs down. I tend to like the 9 motor but I modified it so much that it doesn't count for your comparisons. Seriously, check insurance - it might sway your opinion and for nearly $3K difference, I'd take the 9... but that's just me. (Message edited by slaughter on April 26, 2008) |

I used to ride a CBR600 before buying my City X. The 9 feels like a more powerful bike than my CBR was. I am very happy with it. I would buy the bike that fits your budget so you can afford to add goodies like exhaust, race ecm, ect. |

I have an 08 XB12R and absolutely love it...that is when it isn't in the shop. We paid $9,500 for it after a couple days of haggling. I would definitely recommend this model, just be prepared for the quirks of a Buell. |

Quirks of a Buell? What are these quirks you speak of? |

The only quirk of my bike is the one in the saddle. Otherwise my bike has been problem free and an absolute pleasure to saddle up too!!! From other posts here, it seems that the '08s have problems. http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/32777/356569.html?1209274799 http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/32777/356569.html?1209276164 Go with your budget!!! Insurance is a big factor, the newer, bigger displacement 12R will definitely be more, just how much more is what you need to know. Spend a few days looking through the archives here in the XB Section to get an idea of what you're in for with the Buell. I will say that from what I've seen the '07 are probably the most problem free as they've been refined for 5yrs. The O8 models offer some nice improvements but it's starting to look like these improvements may have brought with them a few bugs. |

I bought the 12 for my first bike 3 years ago...it's my first bike so my skill level isn't where I want it yet...I can't keep up with some of the guys on the 9's...you won't be missing much in the way of power and the 9 is a bit of a smoother ride. You're in college...go with what the budget allows for now and when you get that HUGE first paycheck...then you can look at the more expensive toys if you are still looking for more power. |

Glad to hear your looking at Buells! I have a '07 12R and love it (I used to ride a CBR6 years ago so I have some experience with metric bikes). The 9R sounds like a pretty sweet deal -- save your money -- you will be spending it on gear and mods anyways! Also, in case you don't know the 9 and 12 are the same basic engine, so you can take a 9 to 12 later so you can always upgrade. Go with your budget and pick up the 9, and make sure you take the riders course -- the torque on the Buells demands a lot from the rider. My .02 cents. |

I made this mistake 12 years ago. I was looking to buy a used dirt bike. I figured I'd go with a 125cc since this was going to be my first bike. (I was 6'1, 185lbs) So I bought a 125. At this time I was happy with the speed and power of the 125. About a month later my buddy bought a 250cc. He let me ride it and I found out that I was missing out. Two weeks later I bought a 250. Just recently I bought an 08 XB12Ss, after the fact one of my buddies told me that all I needed was a 9. That the 9 was plenty of bike for me. As you can see, I learn from my mistakes. Go with the higher cc or you'll be kicking yourself in the arse down the road. (Message edited by boney95 on May 02, 2008) |

This is a personal decision you're going to have to make on your own. Maybe saving money is more important to you. Maybe you're more laid back than me. Maybe you have some other qualitative consideration to factor in. As for me, I can't be happy until I get the biggest and best of whatever I buy, so I couldn't own the 9 because I'd always be wishing...coulda shoulda woulda. |
