Hey guys, I have a 05 XB12scg and the last couple days the fan has not turned off while riding. Is there a sensor somewhere that needs to be replaced? On my way home lastnight it was ~55, not hot enough for it to be running ALL the time. Thanx |

Does the engine feel like it's running hot or are you sure the fan shouldn't be on ... Either the fan sensor is bad or you engine is running lean .. |

I bought an infra red thermometer on eBay for about $25. Turns out to be very useful for many things.
This is a Dura Max. A good place to start would be to measure the temperature of your cylinders, and then compare those temps with the temp. specs in the shop manual. That way you can see if the engine is overheating or the fans are coming on before they are supposed to. |

The bike does not seem to be running really hot, but it is running rich. Been meaning to get it retuned anyway. Quess I'll start there. If it is the fan sensor where is it located? |

Fan is controlled via the ECM, using input from the cylinder head temp sensor, which is located damned smack in the middle of the rear rocker cover. It's a single gray wire. I believe the sensor takes a short to ground to indicate an extremely high temp (this used to cause issues in very heavy rain with the rear cylinder cut-out kicking in due to a faulty reading), so you might want to check that wire for any signs of damage before replacing the actual sensor. I would have said before that this sensor going bad should cause a check engine light and a code, but a recent post in the XBoard seems to indicate otherwise. |

The main problem is that the trouble code covers two different errors: a short to ground and a broken wire. All TC 14, but two different errors which lead to different effects. A bad sensor generally throws no error, but behaves irregular. Regards, Gunter |
