My first time. WOW! words hardly describe how amazing that road is. I saw a few xb12's, a sweet S1 with clip ons, a brand new, temp-tagged 1125r from Ohio, and met Vince, the yellow-mohawked dragonslayer toting his yellow XBR. Overall, a pretty good Buell representation. Were any of you guys down there? Couldn't have asked for anything more from the XB9S. I sent the forks out for service, wrapped the head pipes, put on new traction grips, cut up the inner airbox, put a new strada on the back, and replaced the front wheel bearings just for the occasion. I'm really digging the tone of the exhaust now with the cut up airbox, wrapped header, and race exhaust. That and the frame doesnt cook my leg on hot days anymore. Also, the uly bags came in really handy for the 500mi commute down there. A few highlights from the 50 or so shots I "borrowed" from some unnamed photo sites (before anyone flames me, hold your fire! I'll be buying a few too!):

sweet. Here's me on Palomar Mountain last weekend, the dragon of the west... Only Buell there... http://kneedownphotos.smugmug.com/photos/282567309 _dNLwV-M-1.jpg try leaning your upper body more into the turn and you won't have to lean the bike so much. On the way up the guy behind me pointed out that I had that problem and correcting it helped so much on the way down. |

Reep - Lost is right. You can pick up the H&B brackets sized for an xbs at twisted throttle dot com. They bolt right up as long as you still have your cheese grater intact and don't mind taking off your passenger pegs. The Uly bags lock right into the brackets, along with just about any other bag H&B makes! Nik - The advice is certainly welcomed. Most of my miles are slab/commuting, so I need to learn how to ride the twisties. I am hoping to sign up for an advanced rider course when I get a few $$ saved up, and getting some leathers. Saw a buddy go down with the "ballistic nylon" suit similar to mine, and except for the padded areas, it didnt provide any better protection than a pair of jeans would have. PS - he and his bike were scratched up, but luckily it was only cosmetic damage. |

Sweet man! I have heard nothing but good stuff about Deal's Gap (Fontana Dam). I am going to be heading there in the near future, where did you stay, how much did the trip run you, any info. you want to share would be helpful, first hand experience is always welcome. Thanks. |

I would highly recommend staying in Gatlinburg, TN - about 70mi from the gap. We rented a 2BR, 2Bathroom cabin with pool table, 2tvs w/satelite, DVD, hot-tub, full kitchen and three full-to-king sized beds, leather couches, large decks with rocking chairs that are perfect for post-hot-tub beers and cigars, etc... basically, it was nicer than my apartment. The cost of the cabin was $125/night, which we divided up by four guys. Hard to beat that deal, and there are tons of similar cabins/deals available in Gatlinburg. Now, for the same price, you can get a 12x12 room with four bunk beds right at or very close to the gap. You can also camp very close to the gap. Personally, I dont think sleeping on the ground, no fridge, no hot tub is worth saving a measly $15-$20 per night, but some may be on a really tight budget. I think those are basically the available options, so you can decide what's best for you. For what its worth, the ride out to the gap from Gatlinburg is scenic and gives you the chance to warm up your tires! Plus, if you stay near Gatlinburg, you can ride some of the other roads nearby which are also very good and have much less traffic than US-129. All those bikes, cars, and cops can get a little overwhelming, especially if its your first time there... ask me how i know! I put a few bucks into the bike ahead of the trip to get her ready, but it was mostly scheduled maintenance and a little unnecessary bling. The actual trip cost me: $168.89 - food and fuel - includes 1000mi trip DC-gap-DC, lunches, dinners and beer. $70 - share of cabin rental for fri and sat night. That's probably about the same as a Thurs-Fri-Sat night weekend at the bars in DC, and about 10x as fun. Hard to beat that! |
