I've got an 08 XB12R with about 4,800 miles on it. Just recently the clutch cable bracket snapped, causing the clutch cable to rest on the header pipe and melting it. Also, I've noticed the bike is an oil hog. There's no leak, and no black exhaust some, so I'm not sure what's up. Finally, in the middle of a long ride yesterday I shut the bike off for a quick break, then couldn't start it. Had to push start several times to get home. It even died in mid ride (and no, it wasn't me). Anyone else having similar problems with their Firebolts?

Ouch! That sucks! I know your pain... bought an '08 Mustang GT back in November, and the car has YET to be functioning properly. It's had EVERYTHING between the engine and the asphalt replaced at least once, some things twice! No joke... transmission, drive shaft, rear end assembly (x2), rear axle, rear tire, and currently I've got some screwy rear brakes. Nothing is more frustrating than a buggy new vehicle. ~SM (Message edited by Swordsman on April 22, 2008) |

The clutch cable bracket has a fix. Buell made a new one that your dealer should have no problem installing and replacing the cable it ruined. Run the oil level at about 1/4 above the low level mark. If you try to keep it at the full mark it likely is pushing some into the air box and burning some there. They will stay at the low end of the marks on the dip stick. Check your battery terminals. Many new bikes have needed a little washer under the battery bolts because the threads bottom out just as they tighten up, making all seem ok when they need just a little more. I had the last two problems on my '05 City-X and my '06 Uly. Several others have had the cable problem. These things will be listed in the Knowledge Vault. Usually easy fixes. Good luck. |

Is that old cable stay a recall item or do I have to wait until mine breaks for a new one under warranty? I bought an 08 tt a month ago and it has the old one. (sorry for hijacking your thread). Also mine is running like crap too, only 2k miles. Seems other 08's have the same issue. (Message edited by spacecapsule1 on April 22, 2008) |

>>>Is that old cable stay a recall item It is not. I'd be hard pressed to think your dealer would say no if you asked politely. |

I broke two of those clutch cable guides and had to get a new cable once on mine. I'm glad they finally did something about it. That little clip was garbage. |

Hey _pooky, who makes that rear rack? I might want one for luggage. Hang in there with the 12R, at 13K miles, mine is just starting to make great power! Hex |

That rack is the Ventura system...you can get it at American Sport Bike as well as other locations. I have one on my bike and love it. That rack is the sport rack which is the "little one". There is a big one (see below) with either one or two bags (they zip together). Finally...there is also a grab handle (see my profile pick) for when you are not using either rack.

It's a Ventura rack. I've got both the large back and small bag which I switch out. It was surprisingly easy to install. Give Amy a call at American Sportbike and she can give you all the info. |

Has anyone else heard of the type engine/starting problem I'm having? Of course, when I loaded it up on the trailer yesterday it started but sounded terrible. Got it the Buell dealer and then, of course it won't start again. Just clicks, no turnover or anything. |

I am going to assume you have checked the battery cables, ground connections, and fuses? I have never had the bike cut out while it was running but I have had some problems starting it after sitting a bit...tightened the battery cables and confirmed the ground was good and have not had a problem when I check these each oil change. |

Yeah, checked all of those things. The bike never really sits..I don't own a car so it is my primary mode of transportation. |

Spooky, my bike has done the same thing as yours. run poor not want to start. it was my voltage regulator. it has went out on me twice. and each times had the same symptoms. as far as oil consumption how much is it using? i have also had valve seals in mine that went bad. the first time at close to 5000 miles. then the second time at 10,000 miles. which caused it to use excessive amounts of oil. like 2 and a half qt. in 1000 miles. but if it is just minor amounts of oil it is using then i wouldn't worry to much about it. |

I went down about 2 quarts in 400 miles. I am at about 4800 miles right now. Wonder if that is the problem. I just called my shop and of course the tech has put nothing in the notes and he was at lunch. |
