I'm torn between a few bikes right now. My price range goes as high as $6000 cash, but I'd like to spend about $4000 and leave room for gear/etc.

Bike 1: 210miles from me
2004 Buell XB12S. Buell Race Kit! ~ $5400obo
~8000 miles on the odo

So Bike 1, owner says it's been ridden easily him being the 2nd owner and has put about 6000 of those miles on it. Said they are the original tires though? I found that hard to believe at almost 8,000??? Funny fealing about it, I don't know.

Bike 2: 300miles from me
2003 Buell XB9S Lightning ~ $4400
~11,000miles on the odo

Seems like a good bike at a good price.
Nothing seems strange about it, and it actually has a brand new belt which is good.

Now these bikes are both far from me, so I cannot look much before I buy. If I drive that far to look, I'll want to pick it up while I'm there, you know?

Both have good pictures, and both are in almost perfect condition by the looks and sounds of things.

There's been a couple others that have escaped my grasp, so I'm also just thinking about waiting for some others to pop up... but I don't want to wait too long!
Any thoughts?

I got 7900 out of my original tires, they're ugly but it's possible. If you go with the 12 you're already a step up performance wise. Plus, if you don't like the race muffler's sound you could sell it for enough money to get what you want. Make him an offer he can't refuse.

does the 9 have the belt upgrade? If not, it doesn't have much life left and the upgrade will cost you an additional $500. Go for the 12, it sounds like a better deal. Whichever one you don't buy, let me know, I may have a buyer for either bike.

There are many people on here who know much more than I do, but as for "bike 1"... I have 6000 miles on my XB9SX and my original tires look pretty good. I think riding style plays a good part in how often a tire change is required. My buddy recently bought a new GSX-R 600, put 5000 miles on it in 5 months, and was already down to the steel belts. Otherwise, assuming both bikes were taken care of properly, it looks like the XB12 is the better deal. Less miles, newer, bigger motor, race kit... only $1000 more. If I remember correctly the '03s and '04s both require belt changes at around 25,000 mile intervals. If "Bike 2" needed a belt replacement at or before 11,000 mi. I would be worried about how hard it must have been ridden. Again, I'm not an expert, so if I made any mistakes, I'm sure someone will chime in.

If there are pucks on the one you want to buy, tell the guy it's a deal if there are no dents under the pucks and no deal if there are. All it'll cost ya is a pair of pucks to see if the upper frame needs replacing!

Sounds like you have the classic 9 vs 12 decision. Do a search with the link at the top of the screen. There are plenty of threads about 9 vs 12 that may help you decide which one suits you better.

For the $$, the 12 sounds like the better deal; lower miles, race kit, better belt, and more power for only $1000 more.

Tires should not be an issue. It's better to replace them anyway because you'll get to pick the tires you want instead of getting what the last guy wanted.

I'm not sure about the '04 but I know that the '03 had recalls on the wheel bearings and kick stands. Ask if those have been replaced. If it has a new belt then it should have the improved '03 belt (better than original but not as strong as the '04+ belts)

With the numerous reports of belt failures on the stock '03 belt I'm not surprised it was replaced before 25K. It may have failed or it may have been replaced as a precautionary act. I plan to replace mine early and keep the old one as a spare.

I'd go with the 12. You can bet it wasn't abused too much, with 8k miles on the original tires.

Check out the usual things before you hand out any cash... belt wear, brake wear, any oil seepage, wheel, frame, swingarm, fork dents/damage, etc.

I wouldn't even consider an '03 unless it had the ungraded belt and related parts or was dirt cheap which this one is not.

The '04 is a better/decent deal but still not a smok'n deal. I paid $5400 an '05 12 last year. It had 3600 miles and was in perfect condition with some upgrades.

First off comparing purchase price is kind o goofy unless your in the same area. Last year I seen great deals if you wanted to drive for days just to look at the bike. I know I paid more for my 03 xb9r but it had 2000 miles on it and it was in showroom floor condition. In my area it was the best deal I could find. I still had to drive over an hour away to get it.

Just my cents!

Alright well, it seems that having the original tires still left on the 12S is not so far fetched... that's good.

I know neither of these deals are 'smoking' but they are the best ones right now that are in my 'local area' if you consider 'local' within 300 miles haha.

There were some great deals here, but they didn't last long. That's why I was thinking about waiting...

That 12s is really growing on me. I was more set on buying a XB9, but I know I'll want more power.

Thanks for the replys, if I buy something this weekend, it will be the 12s!

Concerning the 12; I only get 3000 miles out of all my tires. I ride hard in the mountains every weekend but I also do regular maintenance. Changing oils (engine and primary) every 1000 miles etc. If this bike has the original tires (I find it hard to believe) but if they are, this bike was rode easy because friction is a bitch on tires and your wallet!!

Go for the 12 and enjoy!
