After a hot ride in traffic today (fans on), it started pinging if I got on it fast. When I got home I noticed a spot on the floor coming out of that hose that runs from something on the front right under the airbox plastics to under the left footpeg mount. Is that a PCV, a feul overflow ?

Anyways, I swear it was a drop of oil and I cleaned it with brake cleaner and a towel. When I looked back a few minutes later there was a flat wet spot. I wiped my fingers in it and it wasn't a drop of oil, it was gas !

Can anyone clarify what I was seeing?

Harleys have it too. Wait 'till your at a gas pump and it vapor locks and starts siphoning out that tube. Don't Ask How I Know!

Don't tell me them station attendants can't hustle!

ya what they said. if you've been riding alot and the frame is warm and you stop to fill-up and you "over-fill" the over-flow comes out where you've stated. been there done that myself

Seemed a drop of oil preceded the gas dripping, that's why I thought it was a PCV. Maybe that was gummed up feul that finally got pushed out....anyways, sounds normal.

I had 60 miles after the last fillup, it wasn't from an overfull tank.....it was at least a gallon down.

In that same area there in the fuel line connection to the fuel pump. The line is a soft tube over a stiff tube, and this is jammed over a nipple on the bolt that connects the line to the fuel pump.

The stiff inner pipe isn't made for repeated flexing, but the vibe on an XB causes repeated flexing.

The inner pipe can split, most easily in line with the end of the nipple. The outer line looks fuel proof but I don't think it is. It turns to goo and then the line no longer holds fuel.

This may be your leak.

Petebueller,

So what you are saying is that is my feul pump that the line comes off of. That makes so much more sense, sometimes I forget the frame is the fuel tank. So that first 'lump' that got blown out after a winter of riding was probably goo'ed feul. I felt it and it felt more like gear oil between my fingertips but I thought it smelled weird. I don't know why I thought it was regular oil. After cleaning up that one nickel sized drop of goo, a few more drips of feul came out and evaporated. Now EVERYTHING makes sense. I'll make a note and expect that lump of goo every Spring ! It wasn't an overfilled tank, it was the winter goo'ed fuel being blown out on the first day hot enough to cause a pressure buildup in the tank?}

The fuel line sits above the overflow and when mine leaked it leaked onto the overflow so it looked like it was coming out of the overflow pipe.

I thought that what you saw as goop may have been a bit of rotting fuel line.

If the leak has stopped its not a problem. It is strange to get an overflow with half a tank. Maybe goo in the overflow causing an airlock. You wouldn't want too much goo though. Bad for the engine.

Yeah, don't hang your 3/4 helmet on the left side rider peg when you do it either.

The smell of gas fumes inside your helmet makes your eyes water.

Tee hee hee!

Gave you a reason to get a "real" helmet.

As frightening as your mug is, I would hate to have to pick bits of it up off the road.
