I'm gonna rip off my old stock pipe and add the race can this weekend. Good idea to replace the mounting straps and hardware while I'm at it? Cost much? |

Not sure of the cost, but it is a good idea. I didn't and ended with a broken one a few days later, so I had to buy them anyway. |

My problem is that the 1st owner played with an aftermarket and installed the staps upside down. I have a feeling that if I can get them off, they'll either be screwed up or I'll have to cut them off. |

Jesus, you're hard on loaded, circular objects, Glitch. I'd at least replace the front one. You can really stress that one, especially if you don't get the muffler seating hard up against the front mount when sliding it onto the header. |

The straps can be bought at a Marine Store that specializes in large motor boats. They cost about $4. Bluewater Marine, I think it is, in Miami mail orders them. It is much easier to replace the straps if one jacks the muffler up tight against the upper aluminum supports. See knowledge Vault for lots on this subject. |

Those straps are expensive for what is basically an overgrown hose clamp. I've had my exhaust off about a half a dozen times and haven't had a problem yet. But then again I reuse my rear pulley bolts too. Some people would think that I'm knocking on heaven's door by doing that. |

At least have a front strap handy. When I put my Spec Ops on, I must have gorilla'ed the front strap. Don't know how long I rode with it broke, but it showed on the pictures from MBV at gixxer corner 1 day after the install. |

I'm gonna have to pull the pully too aren't I? Damn it. |

If you don't want to replace the rear straps (I haven't yet, and I've had my muffler on and off at least a half dozen times), just turn them around before you put them back on, so that the nut sticks out on the left side of the bike. Voila, no more idler pulley removal to get the muffler off. Hell, even if you DO replace them, turn them around. Screw removing things you don't have to! NO u don`t need to pull the pulley unless the Previous owner has got them on there that ya can`t get at them.. but some funky sockets to get in and around always works... |

you can see how he did this. The nuts are on the bottom. Some would say that keeping your nuts low is good, not in this case though. |

I have had mine off and on several times without breaking a strap, but that is because I have a spare on hand in case I need it Seriously though, if you are careful torqueing the straps you should be able to re-use them. You can get to the rear straps using a 1/4" drive socket and extension without removing the tensioner. The torque specs and procedure are: 1- front strap till snug 2- Rear strap 48-60 IN/lbs 3-Front strap 108-120 IN/lbs 4-Clamp 28-30 ft/lbs 5-Front mount 16-18 ft/lbs It is a good idea to have a spare strap and a spare torca clamp on hand just in case. |

Apologies for the hijack but what is a good heat-resistant paint for the stock can? I'm looking for something to touch up some scratches before the inevitable rusting starts. |

Thanks to all for the insight. I installed using my old straps, they weren't in bad shape at all. I did replace the header to can hardware and the bolt the runs through the top of the can and engine block (it was missing). One word of advice to anybody doing this swap. Get some 600 grit sandpaper and sand the end of the header and the inside of the new can. Slid right on after I did this. All I can say is wow....this motor has just come to life by adding the Buell race can. The sound is amazing as is the pop in performance. |
