I took the clutch and primary off due to noise in primary, thought I had a bearing going bad, now when you turn the mainshaft it sounds rough like a growl. is this normal? or do I split the case.? the bike makes noise coming from clutch side of primay case but only in neutral, if you put in gear it goes away. i ajusted clutch many times as well as checked belt tension. can't seem to find the problem. need help |

Belt tension? Or do you mean Primary Chain tension? Also, have you taken care of the primary torque?

This is a MUST DO!! Major difference between 200 ft lbs and 250 ft lbs. Rather funny how the torque wrench I use is damn near as long as the bike. Squash, A little sound is normal. Hard to explain the sound though, almost a hollow howl with a slight grind?? Which is normal. Or a crunchy grind?? How many miles on it, and what type of primary fluid do you use? I know alot of questions, but they might help diagnose it better. |

sorry I checked chain tension (meant to say that) bike has 52k and i just changed to primary lube HD FORMULA+. But noise started before i changed. Now when I drained primary the fluid looked like coffee and thick. I don't know how water would have gotten in there. I'll pull out the mainshaft outer bearing and hope thats it. any input couldn't hurt. |

I've been using Formula+ for about 20,000 miles, and I've not noticed any more than normal noise. Now when I drained primary the fluid looked like coffee and thick. That don't sound good. I don't know how water would have gotten in there. Me either, but it dose happen, especially over the cooler months. Since it's colder our trips tend to be shorter, so the oil doesn't get hot enough to evaporate the water from the oil. Wish I had some more ideas. At least it sounds like you're mechanically minded. |

"I'll pull out the mainshaft outer bearing and hope thats it" I'm thinking that in order to pull any transmission bearing, case-splitting is required. I may be wrong, but that's how I remember things. If it's howling now, I'm thinking splitting the cases might not be bad idea. It's normal to make a little bit of noise free-turning the mainshaft, but I don't know how to describe it and compare it to your sounds. It's possible it could be something else. |

you can pull the outer bearing from the primary side it just has a retaining clip. it is the only one you can get to without tearing down. I'm not looking forward to splitting... |

Dark primary fluid could be a leaking crank seal as well. I don't think that could create a noise though, except maybe some screaming when you hit the first turn after oiling down your rear wheel. (or in my case, some chuckling by the neighbor as I did a perfect 360 degree spin as I pulled away from the stop sign on my M2... never dropped the bike though! ) |

whatever the noise is it is in the tranny. I would say bad bearing, and its f-ing sux that these bikes don't have trap doors. any body want to buy a 03 xbsl yellow 5200k with bad tranny bearing??? |

Squash, before splitting take a look at the clutch itself. I had water contamination in the friction plates on my '03 9SL and they were swelling and partially engaged as the bike would warm up, causing a squeal, the warmer it got the more the clutch would grab. Try new primary fluid, let the bike get warm, I mean really warm, let it idle for 30 mins or so and see if it becomes hard to shift, BE CAREFUL, IF THE CLUTCH GRABS SHE'LL TRY TO DRIVE OFF THE KICKSTAND(Don't ask how I know). If shifting become difficult at temp it could be you clutch. Just a thought and a whole lot easier to check now without a case split. (Message edited by luxor on April 18, 2008) |

I took the clutch basket off along with the chain and sprocket when you spin the tranny main shaft I hear the noise, it is inside the tranny housing. I looked it up on service manual and it has one bearing then washers and gear mainshaft 1, 2, 3, etc. the clutch basket looks good. The only option is sell the bike or strip down to square 1... |
