Hey guys First post for me, but I've been reading the archives for a while now. Thought of a new one for you guys, I hope... I just bought a 08 City X, kick ash, (love every second of it btw), but I'm disapointed that my "transluscent" airbox cover does not really look that way. Too much plastic in the way inside. Im happy with the power and the way it sounds. I just want a more open airbox. From what I've read, it seems easy with the open airbox conversion, but I've never seen it done without the ecm upgrade, and exhaust. If I take the top section off, will it effect performance, drivability, or anything else I missed? Id really like to leave the bike as stock as possible, but like I said, I'd just like to see through my airbox a little more. Ideas? Thanks and cheers! |

You can't take the top off, or it will have no filtered air. Cutting holes to allow light to reflect off the white filter will make it look better. I've always wanted to paint the airbox parts silver for maximum reflectability. |

I recommend the American Sport Bike open airbox kit. But for that you need to reroute the oil breather tubes. Not hard but it adds a few bucks to the cost. Here is everything you need: http://www.americansportbike.com/shoponline/ccp0-p rodshow/A9304.html Open Airbox http://www.americansportbike.com/shoponline/ccp0-p rodshow/5623.html Parts for breather http://www.americansportbike.com/shoponline/ccp0-p rodshow/A9306.html Oil Catchcan http://www.americansportbike.com/shoponline/ccp0-p rodshow/5641.html Filter for the breather. The result is great, you will be able to see the entire filter right through the airbox cover. Here is my old setup with carbon fiber cover on my Ulysses: Don't mind the scribble on the frame |

Just go to the auto parts store... look for the Chrome Rocker Panel Tape....should be about 3 to 4 inches across and in a 12 foot roll. Then have fun! I've got a good picture of what mines looks like, but not on this pc... let me look for it and I'll post up. |

Ditto to what Frog said. I was told that if you open the airbox and go with the Cold Air Induction, you should run the race filter. True?

You said City-X so you don't have the exhaust valve modulator to worry about, that makes it easier. To stay Mostly stock, get the A. S. B. air box eliminator kit. You can leave the crank case vents routed exactly the way they came from the factory, tho most people around here will think you are nuts. Keep the stock air filter. To mount the A. S. B. filter lid you will need to get a 6" piece of all-thread and drill one hole for a wing nut. (this only applies when leaving the stock routing of the crank case vents) If you go to the K&N filter you will GREATLY increase air flow and need to remap you ECM or get a race ECM or whatever has to be done on the '08 models to get more fuel. As long as you keep the stock air filter you should only see a small increase in airflow and the computer can compensate. Besides, the Stock air filter is white so it will show through the cover much better than the dark red K&N filter. I'll see if I can take some pictures and post after while. |

OK. Here are the pics.
In the first picture you can see my breather hoses in the stock location and the rod I added to hold the new lid on. (there is a loc-nut underneath the plastic)
In this pic you can see the lid installed on the stock, white air filter and the wing nut holding it on. You will have to plug the two holes that come in the lid in some manner. I used two short ss bolts with loc-nuts and rubber backed washers.
Here it is viewed through the Kick Ash air box cover. Keep in mind you cannot see through my carbon fiber buckle guard.
Here it is again.
And finally, here it is with the "normal for me" K&N filter. Notice how much less you notice it. |

When the kit is installed as intended, the breather vent hoses are routed to an external catch can or vent. The two holes in the lower tray where the vent hoses normally come into the air box get nut-sert type devices put in them and two screws run down from the air filter lid to the nut-serts to hold the lid on. Since I did not re-rout my vent hoses I had to make a new lid hold down device and plug the two holes in the lid. I hope that makes sense. |

Ok... I just thought u used the one straight bolt through with the wing nut to hold it down in place... As far as the vent hoses all I did was use a 8 inch piece of hose and routed it up one end and then back down the other end all that is needed there, and then of course route the head vents to a catch box... I see what you did now and why..Thanks |

Hey Ftmyers, I also did the open airbox mod. I did it myself just dremeled off everything but the top sanded nice and smooth drilled 2 holes to hold it on to where the breather tubes used to go (yes did the breather mod too.) It looks very good not running K&N so don't have to run Race ECM yet. Here's some pics. P.S. Cheap way for some good looks and sound.

VERY nice, guys. I appreciate all the suggestions. The parts are on the way, and I'm a happy guy. Now if I could just stop working 60 hours a week, then throw in the constant massaging of my pregnant wifes feet, I might have time to mod my bike up..... Thanks again |

Question? If I were to open up the airbox(dremel) and install a K&N filter, would I need my TPS reset? I have an 05 XB9SX with stock ECM and pipe. Thanks. |

I would not run the K7N without the race ECM. If you run the open air box and the K&N then the race ECM is a must in my opinion. |

My Race Kit had a Blue and White Air Filter. It was not a K&N but I forget what Dave Stueve said it was. Still, it looked great. This Picture is from a little distance and you can still see it.
