You may have noticed that the terminals on the stock battery on the Firebolt are FLUSH with the battery enclosure while all of the aftermarket replacement batteries have recessed terminals, making connecting the flat cable ends impossible. For the life of me I cannot locate a proper spacer kit. Any ideas? | ||

Perhaps you could make use of the right sized copper washer from http://www.mcmaster.com/ I've had to jerry-rig a couple of battery cables for cranking operations. Once I had to use a piece of copper tubing to crimp over the end of a severed battery cable. I flattened the uncrimped portion and drilled a whole through it that fit the threaded battery post. Worked like a charm. If you do decide to retrofit an aftermarket battery, let me offer these observations: 1. use copper. 2. maximize your contact area. 3. ensure all your connections cannot work free from vibration. | ||

I'm only confused because I keep hearing all this chatter about Hawker Odyssey batteries and the like, and never have I heard of this problem. What gives? | ||

Many non-HD batteries use such spacers. A quick perusal of any local shops' Battery Mountain (Wear clothes you don't care about, and look out back), should net you multiple spacers. | ||

I've always suggested OEM replacement parts. The stock H-D battery is made by East Penn, and a solid AGM battery that is well worth the cost. Left on a battery tender when not in use, it should give you a long service life. My S3T used its OEM battery up until last year. Chris | ||

I returned the batt. I'll get a new one from Stone Mountain Buell. Lesson learned. | ||

If your old battery isn't toast, but just feeble and dragging, you might consider the Batteryminder charger/conditioner. Learned of it from a fellow badwebber who was selling an unused replacement battery (unused because his old battery came back to life after 4 days on the Batteryminder). Same result for me  | ||

Thats funny, I bought a battery for my XB9R from AutoZone, it was a no maintenance AGM sealed unit and it came with the proper spacers. On top of that it has lasted longer than the the 2 previous HD batteries I had used. YMMV. | ||

Guzzi, If you need help I am local. My number is in the BRAN. Been an auto tech for the better part of 13 years and know my way around a wrench. As a tech I always insist on factory parts 90% of the time. The only parts on my bike not from the factory are the EBC brake pads and I get them at Stone Mountain HD/Buell. | ||

I have a Battery Tender because my old Ducati Paso has an analog clock that drains current all the time -- and will kill a battery in a coupla weeks. I rode the Buell so often that I never bothered hooking it up. Only when I got hurt -- and couldn't ride for a while -- did I notice that the batery had weakened noticeably. After the mail-order batter fiasco, I put the old (OEM) batt on a 2 amp charge -- threw it back in Sunday night -- and haven't been in a cage since. When it's time, I'll get a new one from Stone Mountain. Buell rules the roost in a garage filled with Italian Iron. Every time I get on this bike I want to ride the others less! | ||

I just replaced the Battery in my XB9SX, the HD/Buell battery is somewhat different with side entrance captive nuts. After some searching for an after market battery I just decided to go with the stock battery again. It lasted 4 years, and was still good but getting a bit weak - it wasn't all that much more expensive than high quality after market batteries. | ||

I had the same problem and I solved my problem by buying the negative terminal cable for my 2004 XB12S from my local Harley shop. I connected the new (negative) cable to my existing (positive) cable with a button head bolt and a nylon nut. Then I double heat shrunk the connection, rerouted the longer cable and now the positive cable DOES NOT lie between the battery and seat! |
