I have had my Micron system on my 12r for a long time now. I had them ceramic coated black, but after time it didnt look so good and I decided to wrap them. While in Daytona for Bike Week, I had to remove the wrap because my pipes began to come apart! I was pissed to say the least. I didn't understand why they were coming loose. I put everything back in place and tightened it all up....just to have it come out again, same location. The front pipe is slipping out of the front of the canister. I am dumbfounded. I can not explain why it continues to slip out. Obviously it is not installed correct, but I am the one who originally installed it, now 8 months later, it;s giving me problems. Anyway, I get home, break the pipes down and make sure they are well seated in the canister and joints. I couldnt get the pipes to go any farther into the can, So I tighten everything up again. I go to install my brand new chin fairing that I just picked up from Harley. (I previously never had a chin fairing on the bike) Well the chin piece touches the exhaust pipe, and if I pull it off the pipes some, the tolerance between front tire and plastic is ~1/2". I feel like the exhaust is correct, but it cant be if the chin fairing is not fitting like it should. I should note that I ordered the black 9 chin piece to better match my bike, are the 9 and 12 different? I didnt think they were. Maybe I was ill informed. I know this is a lengthy post, but I wanted to convey all necessary info. Any insight would be greatly appreciated guys. |

I have not been able to get the chin cowling to fit well with the Micron without a lot of adjusting. I can't say why the pipes are coming apart, unless the clamps are going defunct. I usually try NOT to reuse clamps for that reason. (I think the heat might do something to them that makes them not hold load well after they're reused). Are the clamps being overtorqued, crushing the pipes? If it was mine, I'd cut the chin cowling to fit better around the pipe, and leave alot of clearance. It looks like it has a lot of room, but it bounces around when you're riding, and when you get home, it's burned. |

The wrap got the header so hot it warped. I see this a lot in acft. They don't wrap the down tubes in acft, but the owners can lean excessively and warp the pipes. Replace the pipe if you can. |

i have the micron. dont have the chin fairing on and haven't tried installing it. seemed there'd be a clearance issue, and i think it looks meaner without it anyway D |

I have a ceramic coated micron. Wrapping the header is bad. Maybe not so bad on the stockers, but the micron is too thin and warping and erosion from high heat would be my main concerns. With the stock Buell fairing mounted, the front tire was close...too close maybe. I think mine made contact with the front tire and it pushed the top into the header and melted it. By the time I got home it was flapping in the breeze. I replaced it with a carbon fiber unit from Al at American Sport Bike. The fit is much better and it holds up to the heat quite nicely. |

i have the micron and the stock chin on my 12r and the tolerance is very close i think same as yours less than half inch but i have ridden the hell out of it and no problems just compress the front suspension and turn the wheel back and forth to check clearance i happen to like the look of it being so close looks kinda mean |

Thanks for all the replies. I was surprised to hear about warping possibly being a factor. I wrapped the pipes a few days before going to Daytona for Bike Week. In retrospect, I did notice the fan kicking on sooner during the couple days I rode around town on short little rides....maybe the wrap was causing excess heat. This is beginning to make sense. The pipe could of warped due to the excess heat and the constriction caused by the wrap? This would explain why the fit is no longer as solid. Plus, I never had a problem with the pipes until I wrapped them. So, that sucks then. I wonder what Micron would do for me. Tread, Carbon chin piece is cool, gave that some thought. CityX- +1 for streetfighter look. But, since I never had one, I decided to add it. So, if it doesnt work, I'm not really LOSING it, cause I never had it. And Jos- they are the original clamps that came with the pipes. I don't think it is clamp failure. No, I havent overtorqued to the crushing point, only till the clamp produces that bubble where a tiny amount of exhaust escapes. They are just as tight as I left them when I have to loosen them to reassemble the pipes when it slips out. After reading the post above, I feel like some warping happened. Plan of action? I don't have one yet. I would LIKE to put the chin fairing on, but want to get micron issue worked out first. Im thinking that if I can't get some pipes sent to me, I will sell it off and get a stock header (prob. from Al) and aftermarket can. Thanks again. |

Check your warranty. Most headers are void if wrapped. More than likely you will have to purchase the pipe needed. (Message edited by brianb on March 14, 2008) |

Micron won't sell individual components, or at least thats what micron told me. |

Micron told me that as well when I first bought the system. I may have shot myself in the foot by disclosing to them that I wrapped my pips. |

Micron won't sell individual components, or at least thats what micron told me. If you need individual parts of a Micron system please e-mail or PM me. We get them all the time for customers who damage them in accidents etc. Each individual header pipe (2 piece) either front or rear, is available at GBP85.10 each. Micron Serpent exhausts are much lighter and thinner walled than most headers, which is the advantage of the hydraforming system used to make them. Unfortunately they don't respond well to wrapping because of this and I doubt if they will cover damage caused by wrapping under warranty. |

Trojan, Thanks. I doubt if they will cover damage caused by wrapping under warranty. I thought the story might end like that. PM on the way. |

That looks really clean. I think the carbon fiber chin fits better for some reason. I'm still on the fence about what to do. |
