can anyone tell me the advantages of using carbon fiber. I have seen numerous posts about using equipment made from carbon fiber. it is the durability of it? cosmetics? charles |

Race applications are for weight savings. Carbon Fiber has a great strength:weight ratio. But honestly, for street use it's the sportbike riders "chrome", more for show than go. |

Yes. It depends on what application you are referring to it in. It is used in some applications to replace components of other materials to reduce weight. In other applications it is purely cosmetic. In some other applications it is used as a light weight protective cover. Carbon fiber might be strong in some ways, but I trimmed a carbon fiber air filter cover with a pair of tin snips. There is one outfit (or more) that makes a carbon fiber single sided swingarm. Probably a coupling of looks and weight reduction. For robotics, carbon fiber might be used for strength (if formed correctly), for weight reduction, for fitting into various shapes for specific tasks in a manufacturing/assembly environment, and for looks (think trade show displays). |

mike, how do you know these things about the use of carbon fiber in robotics?

I saw a NICE set of carbon fiber wheels. They weighed almost nothing. |

I just pay attention to stuff that I read and see and hear and when listening to friends in various industries. Some engineers I've worked with have gotten various magazines on robotics that I've read through. Plus the software I use primarily is used by some designers in robotics design (SDRC/EDS I-DEAS). Plus I'm just a generally curious sort of guy I guess, and I peeked at your profile and saw the robotics in your list and thought I'd include something relative to your field of interests. http://www.eds.com/products/plm/ind_solutions/auto_sup.shtml http://www.eds.com/products/plm/success/ideas/ford.shtml (ps, I couldn't get to your company web site because my browser is Flash impaired.)

A decent site to show the breadth of uses of c/f. http://www.gmtcomposites.com/robotic_composites.htm

Rocket has carbon Dymag wheels. You might want to ask how they hold up on durability. |

Better than the S1W Rocket ps. I thought at first I couldn't tell the difference between the stock and Dymag CF wheels but much later after I'd ridden them for a while I began to realize that the big Buell turned in quicker, or at least I felt like it did. |
