I have noticed lately that there has been a shiny line developing on my belt drive on my 2003 xb9r. I looked all around and took the guards off to look under those and I can't see anything it would rub on. The line isn't deep or anything, just a surface mark. Does anyone have any ideas about what it might be or if my belt may be going bad? Thanks!

Something has rubbed on it at some stage ?
Maybe a rock got caught up for a while then spat out ?

did you pull off the front pulley cover? i would think that would be the best place for am object to get hung up and rub.

Yeah i pulled off the front pulley cover and gave it a good lookover. I'm not too worried about it but I checked the part number and it matches up with the original '03 belt so it may be time to go ahead and do the upgrade....

Check the idler pulley also, maybe it has a lump of something stuck on it.

My idler pulley has picked up chunks of tire rubber at track days that get smashed into tiny "pancakes". It has never caused the above condition though.

Just an idea.

There is a little rubber flap type thing on the back of the pulley cover of the 03's.
Mine was just crusty and hard and didn't leave any marks on the belt but I took it off anyway.
Could be that.

I think you are right buelltroll. I just went out and checked it out again and i found a rubber piece under my bike. It is about an inch by two inches or so and it is kind of hard and looks like it may have fallen out when i took off my front belt guard. It was dark outside so I just didnt notice it fall out. Thanks for the help and ideas!
