Over the last few months I've noticed a "rubbing" sound coming from the Uly's clutch (42,000 miles). It is quite prominent when I engage first gear, then disappears when I start moving. It occurs to a lesser degree a couple seconds after disengaging the clutch while still in neutral. I'm assuming it's a bearing. I ride all year round and with a short commute and cold winter temps I do get some condensation of moisture in the tranny. I now change tranny fluid at each engine oil change, but the damage has already been done. In the Uly shop manual, referring to Figure 6-12 (exploded view of clutch assembly) it looks like the bearing (part 15 in the figure) that is just behind the "release plate." Does this sound likely? I'm assuming all the XB clutches are similar. I know I'll have to get the clutch tool from American Sport Bike, but does anyone have confirmation that this is probably the bearing? Oh yeah, one more thing...can the primary cover gasket be re-used once? (I know the trick of putting in threaded rods to guide the gasket) And one MORE thing...while I've got the primary cover off is there anything else that I should check? Thanks in advance for any help! In 42,000 miles this is the first thing that's needed attention...pretty impressive. | ||

It may well be the idle pulley, check that first. If you do have to take of the primary cover, get the gasket too, if you use it again, it'll just leak. While you're in there you'll probably ant to change the primary chain adjuster boot, not sure what it's called, but with that many miles, it'll need replacing. | ||

Glitch - I could be mistaken on the following, but believe that it is called the Primary Chain Adjuster Shoe. On the early XBs it was on the scheduled service/maintenance list for replacement every 15,000 miles or so. Then the shoe was upgraded and dropped off the scheduled service/maintenance log for regular replacement Could be mistaken on all this, but think I am right Obviously, if you were going into the Primary, it would be worth inspecting...as I recall the shoe was fairly inexpensive...I replaced mine on the 03 XB9R I used to have, with the upgraded shoe | ||

I'm assuming all the XB clutches are similar. My bearing went bad at 22k from doing too many wheelies. Slight grinding while using the clutch. Sounds very familiar to me. Good luck.
