First off, I haven't test ridden an XB yet, I sat on both models last year at the bike show and was inpressed. I"m wanting to get a bit of info first before a test ride, I know how I'll feel after riding a new bike, know what I mean??? I'm 'looking' at the XB12R, do yall have any problems scratching the tank (or airbox) with your beltbuckle? Do you use the Buell tank cover or something similiar??? Besides checking for loose bolts, is there much standard maintainence? Is it pretty easy to get to the oil drain plug, etc... Warranty and extended warranty, do you buy the extended just in case of major problems??? Did ya, and would you recommend them??? Do they make a 'shop manual'? Is it helpful and how much does it cost??? Prices: Can I expect a dealer to 'deal' much on the new '04 models? And what do they charge for the extended warranties, generally??? And lastly, I live in the Arlington,Texas area. There's Longhorn over in Grand Prairie and Fort Worth over on west 820, anybody have any dealings with either of these dealerships or any suggestions in the area??? Thanks for your help. A black xb will show scratches and dirt easily. I have scratches on mine, it adds character to the bike.  It aint no garage trophy. I ride it. Buckle guards are available for the particular. Standard maintenance is pretty straightforward. Oil and tranny plugs are easy to get to. Need a really small oil filter wrench. Service manual is $56 bucks (worth it!). Motorcycle jack runs about $100. If you're gonna get an aftermarket muffler you may want to get wheel stands instead. Not all mufflers can support the bikes weight with a jack under it, like the stock and Buell Race kit mufflers. Prices: I looked at 3 dealers in the Denver area. No one was really moving anywhere on price, but this is a bike-rabid town. I would suggest looking at the set-up fees and such at the various dealers. I hear dealers will negotiate a cheaper extended warranty. Look for the best "out the door price" coupled with a reputable dealer. If your dealer has a crappy reputation, I would skip the extended warranty. I have a 4 year extended warranty on my 'Bolt. I picked it up primarily because it was a new line of bikes, about $799. You get a 2 year warranty now with a new bike. What is peace of mind worth to you? Hope this helps... | ||

Kevin, I have the Buell Tank Guard. Bought it mainly because I love the brushed aluminum look, but it has saved (that portion) of my tank form many a scratch. Now, there are scratches and scuffs everywhere else on my bike, but like Chainsaw said, that's character. Of course there is regular maintenance - there is on EVERYTHING. Hell, I bet even your dishwasher states in the manual that you're supposed to clean the drain plug or something. That being said, for the most part the maintenance is relatively easy to do, provided you're willing and at least a little bit mechanically inclined. Some of the bigger stuff may take a while, but it's a good learning experience. The '04s come with a two year warranty. That's probably more than enough. I have a 4 year extended on mine that I purchased mainly because 1) it was the first year of a completely new model and 2) it was cheap (less than $500, IIRC) Yes, there is a shop manual (well, ok, there isn't one for the XB12R yet, but there will be). It's a little pricy at $55, but worth every penny, and absolutely necessary if you plan on doing any work on your bike yourself. As to price, that's up to the dealer. I seriously doubt you'll find one who's willing to go much under MSRP - if you can find a 12R for under $10,500 within the first couple months of them hitting showrooms I'd say you're doing well...under $10,000 and buy it that instant. | ||

Thanks for all yalls help...That shop manual sounds good, I usually do my own fluid changes and minor maintenance and those manuals come in handy.I didn't know if that plastic(or whatever it is) tank would scratch up so I'll probably look into getting one of those small stick on guards. I'm not a maniac but I am a bit particular about stuff... I'm going to go next week and test one of the 9r's and go from there. I'll probably go to a couple of dealers and talk $$$ and warranties and see who I feel most comfortable with... Thanks again for the info... Kevin | ||

I'm going to go next week and test one of the 9r's and go from there. I just got my dealer to sell me a 03 XB9S or 9R for $7999 plus tax out the door. I am waiting on a price for an 04 from him before I decide. | ||

Rkc00, Tell you dealer "out the door includes tax". That still looks like a good price though. |
