Has anyone tried this? Is it possible? I've heard people mention the idea in other threads but someone has had to try it......... What to do with the fuse box????? |

Jedhead, I'm actually interested in the reverse (9R to 9S tail). The tail section itself is no problem, nor do I think that the battery and rear brake reservoir are. The real problems, as you noted, are in the electronics. I also believe that portions of the shock assembly are mounted differently. As far as the electronics go, I would say that the best place for them is the Firebolt's 'trunk', however, you may have to lengthen them to get them there. Not necessarily difficult, but time consuming and not the best solution, especially if you don't do a good job sealing up those splices. Are the fusebox and relay box under the passenger area of the XB9S seat? If so, you might be able to stretch them a bit to get them into the trunk and then either screw them down or simply zip-tie them. All in all, I'd say you would need to purchase the tail assembly et al (sub-frame, plastic, seats, etc) and a new battery tray, then get creative to mount the shock reservoir, brake reservoir, and electronics. I personally think it's more trouble than it's worth going from a 9S to a 9R, due to the electronics (plus I think it'd look funky!), but I'd be happy to help out in any way I can. |

Yes, the fusebox and relay box are mounted under the seat on the 9S. The only thing that I don't like about the rear of the 9S is the "hole" that's visible near the cooling fan. It just looks ugly. I know that there are a few after market perforated aluminum covers made to take care of that. I just like the look of the 9R rear. Plus there is no...... and I mean Zip....storage on the 9S. I can't even put my I.D. or registration anywhere. Also, I pondered back and fourth between the R & S trying to figure out which would be better for 2-up riding. I try not to make a habit out of it, but my wife has suddenly sparked major interest in riding. (trying to get HER to get a blast but she seems too content being a passenger) Anyway, the 9R seems to be a little roomier no? If I can figure out how to relocate some things maybe we can swap I guess I need to go into the dealer and check one out more thoroughly because I'm not familiar with the size of the compartment, etc.... |

I plan to build this as soon as the parts are available to me. The new 12R black tail on my 9S. Although, I would consider the other neccessities in possible trade, I must have the color impregnated body work from Buell to finish it off. Slightly lower bars, possibly R model footpegs, too? Not sure yet if I'll have to start building the engine up to keep me satified. I'll start with the ergos & cosmetics, then go from there. |

That's what I was thinking. I was really stoked to see the 2004 9R's in black. Now if I could just figure out the hard part...wiring.. |

Only the XB12R is available in black for '04. The wiring should be straight forward, & I'm assuming a somewhat simple installation. I'm pretty stoked on all the newly available color combinations; been thinking about an S model with matching fly screen & front fender (black, yellow, or red), then the air box cover (black, yellow, red, blue, or white), and a 9R tail (black, red, blue, white). |

The wiring shouldn't be hard, Jed, jsut time sonsuming if you do indeed have to lengthen that stuff. all you'd be doing is splicing in additional length. As to swapping, I doubt it...I'm probably never going to get around to doing it, but if I do I'll be buying th parts so that I still have the stock stuff. That custom seat was expensive! LOL |

Oh, and if you do this and need it, I have bracket mounts for the fuseblock/relay block that snap onto it so that you can screw them to something. |

Cool.... I may not have to splice at at! I would be cutting it kinda close but it looks like the wiring may be just long enough to relocate. And your right, after checking it out again last night and letting the whole idea sink in, it doesn't seem so difficult . I'll keep those brackets in mind, I may need em |

I had just let this idea tickle my mind, but now after doing some insurance searching it has become more of a front burner idea. I had planed on getting a R and just leave it at that (better 2up seat) Then I found out it would send my insurance up $581 a year and the S will send my insurance up $68 a year. Didn't take me long to do the math either. |

Isn't it sad that the damned insurance agencies apply a premium to the 9R over the 9S, even though they are the EXACT SAME MOTORCYCLE in every respect except appearance and ergonomics. Morons... Bryan |

That's the way it's always been. Used to be a racing stripe on a paint job would increase your insurance premiums. Why do you think me and others are waiting for the 55" wheelbase SportTourer model to come out. "Why it's just a lightweight cruiser sir". |

I should press this...go and get a quote for the same coverage as if my bike was a 9S and then write them a letter explaining that there are no differences at all...might not get things changed, but if they refuse in the face of reason it'll let me blow some steam off calling them discriminating idiots. |

I just figured out why it doesn't jibe with me...the front end sticks out over the front axle, while the rear doesn't...sort o fthe opposite of naked bikes in general... |

PRECISELY! Jed, change those amber wheels to blood red, the header, exhaust, and jugs to red ceramic coat, and ALL exposed chassis to black, and you'll have what I want my 9R to end up as. |

I love the way the front fairing sticks out over the front end and the back is so short....Like putting the S-3 fairing on an S-1.....REX |

Question guys... I've got an XB9S-L and one of the reasons I love the look is the bobbed rear that lets the tire hang out there. I'd like for the cheese grater eventually to go. My wife won't ride because of the tiny seat, but we have a second bike she's learning on and we can ride together... so I unbolted the passenger pegs. NOTE: If you do this, there is some hardware under the seat that is held down by two of those bolts... also note: of the four bolts there are two lengths. I switched the long for the short in order to bolt down the hardware from inside with the nuts that come off so that everything is still secure. So, with that tip said, I'm torn because the cheese grater rear end is part of the frame. Wondering if anyone had directions on how to do a fender removal, or if everyone who's done it has just "winged" it. I don't want to take a hacksaw to my bike and was hoping someone knew of some company doing a kit. I asked competitionwerks.com, but the site manager told me they had no intention on doing a kit for the XB-S Buells. I'd probably rather live with the fender that try major "surgery," but would love any input on this from folks with experience. |

Dmuz, Trojan Horse makes a 'fender eliminator' kit for the XB9S that gets rid of that cheese grater and replaces the rear light/turn signals. http://www.britnett.net/trojanhorse/listings/305.html Bryan
