My 12r is not running well after a service I had done on it.I mentioned this in a previous thread. (bike not idling-

The mechanic claimed it was an intake leak. He says he fixed it. Although the bike runs a little better it seems to be running strange. It seems to have developed the surging problem, (while trying to maintain constant revs) that others have mentioned before. Its noisier (engine noise not muffler noise) and it seems to vibrate much more(especially at idle). The main difference is the heat. The headers get super hot when commuting around town and idling, (such that they glow orange in the dark) in the day they are a purple/brown color. Ive read that this is normal too. When on the throttle, the bike feels great and seems to be better than it ever was. Overall though it all feels wrong/jerky full of vibrations and has lost some of his smoothness. Since the initial 'service' the weather has got a lot colder. Does the air temp make it run hotter? Its nice and warm for the winter but if it remains this hot it will be un-rideable in the summer. Does it sound like something is wrong with this bike. Should I just get used to it?

Could be a lean condition. This would make one run hot, surge and would also add some power.
Is the noise possibly excessive pinging?

TPS reset problem ?
Vacuum leak ?
Advanced Timing ?

Simple check would be the spark plug condition. You can find pictures of lean burning plugs in about any service manual car or bike.

Sounds like they created an intake leak??

The early symptoms sounded like a bad TPS reset, but now they tore the intake apart, and you have new symptoms of an intake leak.

My $.02

Your headers GLOW IN THE DARK?!?!?

Holy Jebus, that ain't good.

As for the purple/brown color, you can get rid of that with the headers still on the bike, start with 600 grit wet-dry sandpaper and work your way up in increments to 2500 grit. Took me about a half hour to get them shiny enough to see myself in them.

Pull the plugs.
If they are white you are running lean.
Sounds like you need to reset the afv and go for a steady ride for a couple of kilometers.
There is a reference on how to do it in the knowledge vault about reseting afv.

If there are indeed no intake leaks, and the tps was properly reset...
I can think of two possible causes:
-The TPS sensor has gone haywire or the related wiring got pinched somewhere.
-Your ignition coils are shot.

A good way to further diagnose is to take it to another dealer and see what they say...

I had very similar symptoms...
In my case it turned out to be weak coils and a very poorly set TPS.

A side note with regards to heat; that was something I have always struggled with (overheating/pinging), and it has never been resolved.

Best of luck,
Peter
