Hi, I remember reading that there are two different Factory Race Pipes. First an early '03 model which will only fit the '03 bikes. Then, there is a later '03 Race Pipe that will fit the newer XB's too. How can you tell the difference between the two by looking? I’ve never read an explanation of the differences. Thanks, Bob |

I hate Bumping, but I to am hoping somebody knows this. I've read through about 25 Googled pages with zero. Is the 03 can black? |

Mine is "flat silver" color, not black but read on... My '03 Lightning has Buell Race Kit #82003-02Y installed. The Revision status of the Instruction Sheet is "REV. 6-13-02" so to me that would seem to indicate it's a pretty "early" issue. The first paragraph of the Buell Instruction Sheet reads as follows: "This race Kit fits the Buell 2003 and later XB models. This instruction sheet covers the following components: muffler, ECM, and air cleaner." The part number of the muffler included in that kit is: 65135-02Y. I think the part number is stamped somewhere on the can but I don't remember exactly where. Finish color is dull silver, not black. Some later versions of the race can have a brighter, "polished silver" appearance. I seem to remember a thread about overall length being slightly longer for some newer race cans... I can't find that thread either. |

I know the one I have came off a '03 XB9R. It's the dull silver finish. The seller told me it was on the bike when he bought it. I have no way of knowing when it was purchased. I don't see any number that matches yours Oddalloy. The only number on it is on the top and it's 342. So does anyone know what the difference is that causes the first version to not work on the later models? How can you identify that model, or the newer one? I guess I'll just have to pull my stock muffler and try the race pipe when I have the time. Thanks for the replies |

I own an '03 XB9S... bought and installed a used Race Can... and I bought and installed the belt upgrade. The early 9 Race Cans do not fit the later bikes cause of the drive belt system... See, the idler pully wheel, next to yer right foot? It's a larger diameter than the early ones... and it hits the right exhaust tip. In my opinion, it's important to change/upgrade to the newer belt. The '03 belts are prone to breaking. The size/thickness between the early belt vs. late belt is significant. The upgrade is on the pricy side but, worth the expense. Piece of mind has no price. |

The pulleys ARE IDENTICAL but the angles are different. I have a 03 Race Pipe on my Uly, and the bike runs just fine. |

Well one way people would be able to tell the difference would be measuring the length then. I measured from the bottom so if you come across one still on a bike you can just use a tape measure. Mine is close to 24 inches long by hooking a tape between the front 2 screw mounts on the muffler body to the back end of the muffler, not counting the length of the exhaust tips. If someone would measure their race pipe and see if it's longer or shorter and post the length, we could have a way to tell what year/years it would fit by it's length. |

I had an 03 9 Lighting with the race kit. I bought a 07 Scg and took both bikes in to the Harley shop to switch the mufflers. Unknown to me they put a small dent in the upper right tip to clear the pulley. You can't see it unless it is off the bike as it is now, to be sent in to have it jet-hot coated. Didn't bother me then and dosen't bother me now, it works, and I like the pipe. |
