OK I have to ask the obvious question - You didn't accidentally leave your kickstand down, did ya? 
I got distracted talking with some guys in my driveway once and took off with my kickstand down and didn't notice it until I got to the end of the block and tried to bank into a left hand turn. It would have probably been ugly if I had been going at speed. |

Tx05xb12s: You need to upgrade to the newer style self-retracting kickstands...or just don't forget to put it up. I've been there and done that, but thankfully have the newer style kickstand. :P |

quote me if i am wrong if you take of with kick stand down the bike will stall
this is on the 2003 xb9r or have they removed this from the later bikes |

The later bikes do not have the "safety cut out." Instead, they're designed to snap up the instant they hit the ground while the bike is moving forward.
This has resulted in a few dropped bikes from what I've read because you have to make sure your bike is fully set on the sidestand before you walk away from it.
Without any weight on the sidestand in the down position, it points straight down. When properly weighted in the parked position, it should be pointing slightly towards the front wheel, so it helps to slide your bike backwards slightly while parking it so it doesn't fall off the stand. |

Good food for thought guys. But I can definitely say the kickstand was up as this was about 40 minutes into the ride and only 5 minutes from the top of the hill (which even makes it more painful!) I took off the offending peg feeler--and it was bent. I take that to mean that there was a bit of force on it--MAYBE enough to lift the rear off the ground? I would also say that the bent feeler would indicate that the peg didn't fold up as well.
Anyway, I will admit that it was some aggressive riding that contributed to the incident--but nothing that seemed different from the previous 30 miles...going to revisit the scene in the afternoon tomorrow for check it out closer. I was in a rush to get back on the bike and away from that corner last weekend. |

Usually, the next thing to hit AFTER the footpeg is the part that DIDN'T bend out of the way.
If your feeler was bent, then I'm betting you hit something else on the bike that was solid enough to lift the rear wheel off the ground.
In other words, the bent feeler is a symptom, not the cause. Check the undercarriage for other scraped parts. It is also likely you simply rode off the edge of the tire without necessarily hitting anything. The fact that it was bent implies that it wasn't just a "touch" but that you quickly slammed it over to that side (normally you'd feel the peg vibrating as the feeler started to drag on the ground). Of course, it could've also gotten bent simply by the fall afterwards, too.
Anyway, I'm thinking you should leave the feeler on, because without it you won't even get that much warning that you're approaching the limit. |

A little off thread, but on topic... I took my feelers off my foot pegs after I raked my shins while mounting and dismounting. I decided that I would never need them because I'm a 1/2" to 1/4" chicken strip rider and I never touch a feeler down. Those round racing pegs at American Sportbike look interesting.

The rigidly mounted pegs might give a little more protection in a tip-over but can be very pricey because they'll bend the whole billet mount.
The billet pegs WITH folding capability might be kinda cool.
Only times I've busted the factory cast pegs though have been when I've dropped the bike. |

funny thing about the feelers - my bike had a broken peg when i got it, and i got used to it while the replacement came in
Now that the new one is on i am catching my boot laces on it - just need more time to adjust |

I would tend to believe that the rear was giving out before the feeler touched down. I had the same thing happen back in 2004. It was easy to say that the peg folded and lifted the rear. But hindsight proved me wrong. I believe that I was breaking the rear end loose and simply ran out of room(read-riding at 120%), and it caught up to me. Good leasson learned on my part. Luckily it wasn't worse than it was, considering the mountainess Georgia region. |

Unfortunately i have experienced this. i was dragging knee on my 12s with bolt pegs. on the right side it literally snapped off. weeks later same corner on the other side (i forgot to take the feeler off) i was dragging knee, peg and boot. i check up and lifted when i set the peg feeler back down and grabbed the wrong way pulling my ass around. it does happen think god i was 2 foot from dirt and i had frame pucks. |
