For those of you with the open airbox conversion. I just ordered a open airbox conversion from americansportbike.com and I was browsing around and I noticed someone said you have to use a catch can with it. Those things are kind of expensive. What are they for and do I really need one? | ||

The catch can stores the oily gunk that runs thru the breather lines you just re-routed out of your airbox. You don't NEED a catch can--you can just let it run out all over the front of your bike, but most people don't like that. | ||

My S1 needed a catch can. My XB don't. The breathing system has gone through a remake that seems to make sure no (or very little) oil goes out the breather. | ||

I get quite a bit of "spooge" out of mine. I think it depends a lot on the humidity where you live. | ||

on my 2006 XB12ss I made a catch can of my own out of a old Maglite and some braided hose and AN fittings I had, hung it right next to the oil cooler and yes it does have quite a bit of moisture/oil in there after every trip. I do believe its all about the area you are in and the humidity, I'm in the SF bay area | ||

I built my own catch can because I was getting such bad coaking on the inside of the throttle body that it was actually keeping the throttle plate from closing. It would stick at WOT and some times it would idle high. I thought it was a bad cable until I looked down the throttle body. I cleaned the throttle body and made the catch can system. I have about 300 miles on the catch can system (New England season is now very limited to ride in) I only have a little bit of spooge so far. I am interested to see how much I get in the container after say 3000 miles. | ||

Mine mostly has water but, sometimes it's chocolate milk, wonder where that came from? I have the billet one from Al and it can fill up in a week (600 miles) if it's on the cool side. Neil S. | ||
