I've had an issue with my exhaust box not working, found that a gear was stripped inside. So I went to Surdyke.com and ordered another one. Waited 2 weeks---Put it in worked great, I get on the road and pull an engine code. Box not working again!!! I checked all my electrical, ground good power good. Throw on my old box, actuates fine. Looks like I have to get a new one again. I don't understand why Buell didn't use stronger parts internally.

On top of all that, got stuck on a mile of road with fresh tar oil...Never seen anything like it. Bottom third of bike looked like it was Rhino lined...that was my first day back on the bike after waiting for stands and a tire to arrive. BWB!!!!!!

Are you sure it's not the actual valve in your muffler that is locking up when it gets hot, causing the stepper motor to stop, thus throwing the code?

It might also be that the cable is somehow bound up, creating stress on the gears inside the servo motor and stripping them.

The cable itself moves fine. I lubed it up well with tri-flow. The new valve worked perfect at first, then quit actuating at all. I tried a different internal motor and the same reaction. I believe there is some fault with the circuit card. The stripped part inside is where the spring is. All gear teeth are present. Today I troubleshot per the shop manual, there are 2 fault trees. One if the self test works, and one if it does not. After all voltage and continuity checks I ended up with the same conclusion, Replace Exhaust Servo. Hope another one fixes the problem. I really want to now if anyone else has had an issue with theirs not working. I intend to keep the exhaust stock...for now.

There might possibly be a short somewhere. I was having trouble with my exhaust valve after only 900 miles with my 07 Lightning. I took it in under warranty and was told that a wire had been shorting out on the battery, which was throwing an engine code and causing the valve to not work at all. They fixed the wire and replaced the servo just in case. No more valve trouble.

Just a thought I wanted to throw out there.

Check the "Wiring harness rubbed bare" thread on 11/4/07. It seems some folks have had some wiring worn through.

If the internal part of the gear is stripping, you problem is mechanical. I still think your actual valve in the exhaust can is binding when it is heated up (due to expansion).

By the way, this should be covered by warranty. Why are you ordering and installing new servos?

Because I will not do business with the dealers, it isn't that expensive of a part. If this new box doesnt work, I will give it to them as a last resort. The dealers in other areas may be more Buell oriented, but here in Phoenix they leave something to be desired. Due to time and my schedule It is easier for me to fix the little things if they come up. I don't run to the dealer for every hiccup, that's the conditioned response they want. The new box is not stripped at all, I dont see where the valve would be a an issue but it is possible. Thanks for the suggestion...
